How Debbie Overcame Years Of IBS Symptoms With The SCD Diet

Debbie's Specific Carbohydrate Diet Success Story

IBS is often referred to as a diagnosis of exclusion. It offers little value to the patient and, at best, is a frustrating diagnosis.

Unfortunately, all too many know what that feels like… nearly 11% of the population to be exact.

I used to be one of them. And it wasn’t until I started paying attention to the research on diet that I finally got ahold of my IBS symptoms in just a couple of weeks.

Debbie, an SCD community member and friend, used to be part of those statistics, too.

Her IBS symptoms were so bad she was afraid to leave the house.

Fast forward 15 years and, thanks to the SCD diet, Debbie is a completely different person.

Is Leaky Gut Making You Sicker?

Read on, as she shares exactly how she overcame the unrelenting gas, cramping and diarrhea that used to rule her life.

IBS Controlled My Life for Years

I’ve been dealing with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) for the past 14 years. I suffered from horrible gas, bloating, and diarrhea every single day. The feelings of urgency to use the bathroom made me afraid to go anywhere. To make matters worse, I had no clue what foods were causing the problems.

I spent numerous hours in the doctor’s’ office undergoing diagnostic procedures – CAT scans, a sigmoidoscopy and a colonoscopy to name a few. The doctors found nothing and the only diagnosis I received was diverticulosis and IBS – both of which were never explained to me.

I Went Gluten Free, But It Didn’t Eliminate My Symptoms

My gastroenterologist prescribed an antidepressant, Imipramine, because he said the side effects of this drug would slow down the gut. It didn’t seem to help though.

My chiropractor suggested trying a gluten-free diet. That was the first time diet was ever considered as part of the problem. That helped a little, but didn’t completely eliminate my symptoms.

I then tried a food allergy test at a naturopathic office. The doctor said that for someone with IBS I didn’t have a lot of foods show up that I was sensitive to… so I avoided certain foods that did show up, but still had problems.

I Was Introduced to the SCD Diet and Everything Began to Change

I’d been telling my friend who is a nurse about my symptoms and she gave me several alternative medicine pamphlets and that’s where I found out about the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle. It was a lifesaver!

From there, I found SCD Lifestyle and I could almost immediately tell a difference when I started the Intro Diet. In just a few days, I had less diarrhea, was actually having normal stools, slept better and definitely had more energy. The recipes and supplements were a huge help and so was the SCD Community. It was so reassuring and comforting to read all the stories and know I wasn’t the only one dealing with these problems! They were quick to answer all my questions, too.

Overcoming Challenges on the SCD Diet (Like Cheating!)

At first, it can be a little overwhelming to think about starting such a restrictive diet. Eating out can be a challenge. I’ve found that there are a lot of delicious foods that are SCD legal… you just have to plan ahead and be prepared to cook a lot.

But, it’s the only thing I’ve found that really works.

I don’t know if I had SIBO, but there were times that I felt so much better while on the diet that I would cheat. But when I did, I would have a relapse – each time taking a little bit longer to feel better than the time before.

When I read the SCD blog post about the digestive health supplement Atrantil, I decided to give it a try. It does seem to help with the diarrhea if I slip up at all, but the only thing that really helps with the gas and bloating is the SCD diet. I am finding that you really can’t cheat on this diet 🙂

I’m a fan of the MRT blood test (it now tests 170 foods!) because it shows you exactly what you’re reactive to which can be very surprising like vanilla & basil for instance (!!). Really? You must work with an MRT/LEAP certified dietitian & do the diet (5 phases) in order to get the healing results. The diet has been very do-able for our family because it’s given us alot of foods to start with. I love how it eliminates all the guessing.

I understand the diet works differently for each individual. As a 30 year ibd alum I think I’ve been prescribed every medicine that’s available without much relief. In all that time I was told repeatedly that diet played no roll in my disease. They couldn’t have been more wrong. After 6 months on the diet I was told after a colonoscopy there were no signs of colitis. I have my life back thanks to the diet. Over the last couple years I have identified trigger foods for me. I’ve also found tons of things I can eat so it’s pretty easy stick to the lifestyle. Thanks to this site for the support they lend.

I did the SCD diet for 6 months with absolutely NO CHEATING! I have had IBS for 30+ years. I felt a bit better in that I didn’t have as bad of cramping, bloating, gas. But it didn’t really help with my constipation. And things that I found problematic at the time now I have no problems with and other foods that were fine on the diet now do not agree with me. It’s just the body doesn’t stay locked in. As well, I do not see how anyone can really stay on such a strict diet for a lifetime. To me that is not really healing it is still a form of managing symptoms and if you ‘cheat’ or ‘go off the diet’ then there is still hell to pay. I also have concerns with how much meat is required to consume on this diet. Eating meat almost 3 times a day is just not considered healthy for a long term diet by any information and advice I have researched. It is nice to have something that can help reduce symptoms when they really ‘flare-up’ but for me I still don’t understand how this is really considered a true mode of healing. If it really ‘healed’ then after a certain time one would be able to eat a more realistic and less restrictive diet. I still mean organic, whole foods etc. But just not so restricted and not having symptoms return for minor deviations from the diet. And not having to be on a diet forever that requires so much time and energy that preparing food becomes my life. So I am confused by this ‘testimony’ of healing. Or I guess I just don’t have the same definition of ‘healing’ as you do.
