Have you settled for poor health?
It’s a tough question, but an important one.
Accepting our symptoms as a normal part of life can turn into permission to stop fighting.
Don’t’ get me wrong, there were moments on my journey when I wanted to do just that.
But here’s the key – refusing to settle.
And in order to do that, we need to be equipped with all the right tools to heal – just like Mara was.
Continue reading, as Mara shows us everything it took to come out on top – from diet and lifestyle changes to the one thing that changed everything.
It all began (or so I thought) in 2005 with extreme acid reflux (GERD). I blamed it on the stress and anxiety of starting a new job. Things quickly went downhill from there.
I began to lose weight and I had trouble doing normal everyday things like walking up the stairs to my apartment. I felt like I had no energy at all.
Have you ever felt so alone, so frustrated and so convinced that what you were going through was just a part of life?
I really didn’t think life could be so cruel and that I was going to have to accept my suffering as a part my life.
I Turned To Doctors For Help
I went to the doctor and was prescribed acid reflux medicine. However, I continued to lose weight and began to have trouble with my joints. I couldn’t close my hands, my elbows and knees hurt and I had a constant stomach ache.
I felt like I just couldn’t go on, and worse yet I wasn’t getting any answers.
My job was suffering – I was a second grade teacher and just couldn’t keep up with the workload or the kids. I became very depressed and started sleeping all the time. I had stopped eating for the most part to alleviate the stomach aches.
Seeking A Diagnosis
On my next visit, the doctor diagnosed me with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – although all the tests had come back negative. He thought I was in the early stages of this disease and I was devastated.
All I could think about was what a burden I was going to be for my family. It seemed life was slowly spiraling out of control.
I discovered that Pernicious Anemia – an Autoimmune disease that affects the body’s ability to absorb Vitamin B12 – ran in my family. The disease mimicked a lot of the same symptoms of MS, so I pushed my doctor to test me for it.
The tests came back positive and I immediately began injections.
The Medications Made Me Feel Worse
I was put on weekly injections because the disease had gone undiagnosed for so long. I began to regain some of my energy but I still couldn’t gain weight and the joint pain and stomach aches continued.
Once again, I was sent to a specialist. This time it was for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). My inflammation markers were extremely high and other blood tests came back positive for Hashimoto’s, Lupus, Sjögren’s.
They put me on medication to relieve my inflammation, and I began thyroid medicine for the Hashimoto’s. I was sent on my way, but I felt hopeless.
Severe Depression Nearly Took My Life
Within two weeks, I was dangerously close to killing myself. Luckily, my husband saw the depressed state I was in and immediately made me stop the inflammation medicine.
Within 48 hours, the depression eased up – that was just one of the many side effects.
I then had my “aha” moment. I didn’t want to live my life on medication – I wanted to get to the root cause of my autoimmune diseases.
The more I read and thought about my life, the more I realized that I had been suffering for years – all the way back to my childhood.
Choosing A Different Path (And The One Thing That Changed My Life)
I began researching relentlessly and this led me to the SCD Lifestyle website. I discovered so many things doctors NEVER told me about my conditions.
I began with an elimination diet and discovered some of my triggers – gluten, dairy, sugar and beans. I removed these triggers from my diet and started adding in more vegetables and fish.
As I continued my research, SCD Lifestyle became my “go to” website. I received an invite from Jordan and Steve to attend a webinar on “Leaky Gut” – this changed my life.
I realized that a leaky gut was the root cause of all of my inflammation and health issues. I knew if I could heal my gut, I could heal myself.
I followed the Surviving to Thriving ebook and learned how to heal from the inside out – removing triggers, adding supplements and eliminating stress. After two weeks on the diet, the inflammation subsided and I noticed a big difference.
I began doing yoga and committed the next three years to staying on course and healing my gut.
For once in my life, I felt someone understood and I saw a light at the end of my dark tunnel.
My Life Today – Symptom Free (Plus Advice For Your Journey)
I’m not going to say it was easy, because it wasn’t. I used a trial and error type approach, but it was so worth the journey.
There were so many times I thought I was doing so well only to discover a food or stressor would trigger my symptoms. I am symptom free and have been for 4 fabulous years!
My doctors can’t believe the healing they have seen (another story altogether), and I am sticking with holistic doctors now. Currently, I have my markers checked once every year for each autoimmune disease – so far so good.
I feel great and I could not have done it alone.
My best advice is to stay on course, go slow, and forgive yourself. Explore the SCD Lifestyle community and know that we are all here to help you heal – because it is possible!
Did you know results like that were possible with diet, supplement, and lifestyle changes?
Mara had so much to overcome, yet she healed one day at a time.
It’s a great reminder of just how powerful our bodies are, if we give them the right tools to fight.
Simplify your journey with our Surviving to Thriving ebook – a step-by-step guide to healing your gut and taking your health back.
