How Ingrid Ended 6 Years of Suffering From Celiac Disease

When I was diagnosed with Celiac disease, my doctor told me the gluten-free diet was the cure.

And that as long as I avoided gluten, I would be fine.

So, I followed the doctor’s orders…

But despite eating this way, I continued to get worse.

I was severely underweight due to malabsorption and chronic diarrhea. My body was breaking down with each passing month. And I wasn’t the Dad I wanted to be for my kids.

What I eventually realized was it takes a lot more than a gluten-free diet to heal from something like Celiac. I needed to heal my gut, not just avoid gluten…

Ingrid stuck to a strict gluten-free diet for 6 years, yet her symptoms only increased. After 13 months on SCD (despite skepticism from her doctors), Ingrid is well again.

The Beginning of My SCD Journey

In 2006, I caught a bug which triggered gluten intolerance (there is Celiac disease in my family). I switched to a gluten-free diet. It seemed to help for a while, even though I had persistent diarrhoea. After that, I experienced six years of intense work stress, with the last two years being particularly difficult. I was finally able to quit the job which was causing a large part of it.

After a year at home, I was still not able to get up in the morning, felt tired all the time, and found I was having more and more trouble digesting foods I used to be able to eat without any problem.

I had a raft of tests with my GP, including a gastroscopy, and learned that I had gastritis and low Vitamin D levels. There was no discussion of how to heal my stomach, other than avoiding the foods that were causing me trouble. I became frightened to eat. And interestingly, I was not losing any weight even though I still had diarrhoea and was not eating a lot.

I started searching the internet for answers. I found your research about “leaky gut.” The more I read, the more I realised that was my problem. I bought Breaking the Vicious Cycle, by Elaine Gottschall, and the SCD Lifestyle book. I read everything and decided I had nothing to lose.

So, I Started the Intro Diet

I started the intro diet on the 23rd of May, 2015.

By the third morning, I could get out of bed! My energy came roaring back and I felt as if a fog had lifted from my brain. By the end of the first week, the diarrhoea that had plagued me for nine years stopped. I discovered that I have issues with fruit (other than berries), and the oats I was eating for breakfast were actually poisoning me. At the end of four weeks, I was starting to feel better.

I’ve always thought that you can heal yourself through diet, but I was astounded by the results. I lost five centimetres from my measurements and felt so much better with my clothes loose again. Weight loss was not my intention, but it was a pleasant side effect. My weight has remained steady since that initial loss.

I Began to Feel Healthy Again, But…

Six months after starting the diet, I began to feel healthy again…

But then came Christmas – a challenging time of year if ever there was one. We also had a family of five staying with us for two weeks over that period, so the challenge to stick with it magnified.

I managed it as best I could, but a nasty relapse towards the end of January put me back in the hospital. Another series of tests showed it was my gut (and not my heart, thank goodness), and I was sent back to my GP for further discussion. The doctors recommended I take Gaviscon or Nexium to settle my stomach, which I refused, saying that I preferred to address it with diet. They were skeptical at best.

My Doctor Tested My Beliefs

When I visited my GP for a follow up, I received a lecture about not taking medications prescribed for me. I tried to explain that I had been successful with SCD so far, mistakenly thinking that I would be congratulated for taking my health into my own hands, and was told that I should not be following a scientifically unproven diet! I was shocked and angry at this response and determined to find another GP. I picked up Elaine’s book again to remind myself that I was doing what was right for me.

I got strictly back onto SCD, and then we travelled to Canada for a ski holiday. Again, I managed it as best I could and was well for most of the trip. On the plane coming home, I drank a breakfast energy drink, which, unbeknown to me, had milk in it. That was when I discovered that milk is not my friend – another nasty episode which convinced me it’s better not to eat at all than to eat something that’s not right for me. Once we returned home I, went straight back to making broth and following SCD.

My Gut Is Healed

It is now 13 months since I started SCD. My gut is healed and I am well again.

I make chicken broth every week and continue to eat as cleanly as possible. I have discovered that grains and milk are the major problems for me. I have introduced some starchy vegetables, like potato, back into my diet and feel better for it. I can eat a little sugar and chocolate again and feel fine. I believe that SCD is the best thing I could have done for my health and will continue to eat like this for the rest of my life.

I want to say how grateful I am that the information you provide came into my hands when it did. I was at my wits’ end. And now I am well.

    Hi Ben, A few years after establishing that I was gluten intolerant, I tried to reintroduce good grainy bread back into my diet. My PT asked me what happened if I ate bread. Well. Bloat, stomach pain, and days of diarrhoea later, I realised it was not such a good idea. My old and wise GP at the time said “If you feel better not eating something, then don’t eat it.” Good advice indeed. I avoid gluten and grains as best I can. SCD showed me it is actually grains of all kinds, including rice, which are not good for me. So, in answer to your question… no, I have not been able to reintroduce gluten to my diet. But I do know that if I accidentally eat gluten/grains in something it will make me unwell for a few days. So it’s not the end of the world! Best wishes for your SCD journey. Ingrid

    Good to see that people are getting solid results on this diet. I’m starting to find my own personal balance of the SCD, while making sure I’m avoiding mycotoxins, so it’s kind of like a bulletproof SCD paleo diet 🙂

    Thanks for this share. I am a SCD patient hahaha! For 3 years now and my health is the best it’s ever been. This protocal has litterally saved my life. I have both Ulcerative Colitis and Celiac disease. When I fall to far off the (wagon) I sure can feel it. Sticking with the SCD way of life is very rewarding for me.     Hi Sarah, At times it was incredibly challenging to stick with it, especially at the beginning. I took Jordan’s advice and kept a journal for the first six months noting how I felt each day, what I was eating, what foods I added in, what things caused me grief, and so on. This helped me to stay motivated. Preparing recipes from Elaine’s book using honey for sweet treats helped a lot too. I found the occasional glass of wine became a treat that I could tolerate, and that helped as well. Your mindset is the most important thing… you must want to get well, and believe that you can.     This is very inspiring, it is nice to hear some one who made it all the way to the end. I have been suffering from digestive issues for 4 years now. I have gone strict with GAPS/SCD off and on. I always feel better when I do but I can’t sick to the diet. Any advice on how to stay on the diet?
