Overcoming Any Illness

Looking back at what it took to get my health where it is today, there were hundreds of moments when I almost gave up.

These were the times I was so sick, so weak and so tired… that I was ready to quit… ready to give up… ready to be done with all this…

But in those moments, when I was teetering on the edge, something always got me through the day… and the next day… and the next day. (Until things got a little better.)

Sometimes, it was watching my son sleep or my daughter’s deep blue eyes and her smile.

Other times, it took more.

Recently, a YouTube video shook me out of some personal stuff I was going through.

It was so powerful, I watched it 17 times in a row.

Something about it resonated not only with what I was going through at the time, but with something I’ve been wanting to write for you… but didn’t quite know how to say it.

About What it Takes to Overcome Chronic Illness

And with that in mind, I’m going to paraphrase some of the messages from the video and put them into the context I’ve been wanting to write for you.

Is Leaky Gut Making You Sicker?

I hope you enjoy it (and you can watch the original video I’m talking about at the bottom):

[Here’s the beginning of one guy’s humble, paraphrased Eric Thomas moment]

I’ve been reading your Facebook posts, your emails.

Some of you are like, “I can’t do this anymore guys. I can’t make it another day… I’m frustrated. I can’t take another setback.”

I’ve been reading that you’re tired. Some of you are scared. Some of you are hurt. I know. I’ve been there.

And I need you to do me a favor.

Don’t worry about the rest of this year.

Don’t worry about the rest of this month.

I’m not even interested in how you feel about tomorrow.

Do me one single favor…

Just Survive Today

I just need you to survive today.

I know you’re thinking “I can’t go through another day like this. I can’t handle it.”

Whatever your illness is… I want you to look at the sickness in your life and think, “I can beat this!”

“I’ve got kids to live for!”

“I’ve got a family to live for!”

“I’m not through yet!”

“My life isn’t over yet!”

I went from being sick as hell to where I am now, and the first thing I did was to say, “I can get through this.”

I outlasted it. I outlasted every single tear I shed on the toilet.

Some things in life, you just have to tell yourself, “I’m going to get through this.”

I wasn’t the strongest guy, but I made up in my mind, “I’m going to get through this.”

What was the one thing I did that most people aren’t willing to do? I just plain never gave up. I never quit.

Most people that fail give up.

It’s about making up your mind that you’re not going to give up – that you’re not going to quit.

Just because you’re not better yet doesn’t mean you’re a loser. Just because the last supplement you tried didn’t help doesn’t mean the next one won’t.

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. It wasn’t easy for me. I had setbacks. I had hundreds of days I wanted to give up.

But what I want you to know is this: you can get through anything, if you tell yourself, “I am a survivor.”

If You’re Reading this Right Now, I Know You’re Not a Quitter

You’re a survivor. I KNOW YOU’RE A SURVIVOR.

So please… just survive today.

And know this: if you were going to give up, you would’ve gave up a long time ago. You would have quit years ago. But you’ve come this far. You’ve worked SO HARD. You’ve already put in the blood, sweat, and tears to get to this point.

Get something out of it!

Don’t give up and don’t give in… and there’s absolutely nothing you can’t overcome. (Even your “impossible” illness.)

[Here’s the end of one guy’s humble, paraphrased Eric Thomas moment]

Do You Want More of this Kind of Message?

There’s nothing that would make me more grateful than continuing this message with you to give you all the information I can in 60 minutes to speed up your recovery… to give you back your life… to help you take control of your symptoms.

We did a presentation on the gut-brain-hormone axis and I hope you check it out.

P.S. – Below is the original Eric Thomas video I graciously paraphrased in this post. Steve and I have been watching his videos for a few years… but this one broke me down into tears and shifted something in me. Please watch it, as it carries the original emotion only ET can inspire (and I only touched on with my humble paraphrasing):

Thank you for posting that video and for your article. I was brought to tears. Sometimes it can be so overwhelming dealing with chronic illness and you are tempted to throw in the towel and accept your fate. This reminded me that I am a fighter and I will not give up.

    Much love and respect,

    Dear Jordan and Steve,

Thank you so much for your continuing sterling work – the emotional support every bit as much as the practical advice. It’s so good to know you’re out there!

I wanted to ask you whether you could elaborate on a side issue that I believe you have mentioned before – drainage problems. Call it excess phlegm, throat clearing, itchy throat, sinus problems, post-nasal drip – for me, it amounts to coughing in the morning to expel excess mucous that was never an issue before I had a big flare-up of UC two years ago. The two things, the stomach and the phlegm problems, have become nasty twins. This horrid accompaniment to my stomach problems has meant that I might get a coughing fit at any time of day (but especially when lying down in pilates or yoga, which makes it worse when it’s supposed to be a quiet time). It means that one’s throat often feels sticky, and in the evenings can get quite dry. Having had the condition checked out and a chest x-ray showing nothing, the doctors have sent me away with a variety of ‘remedies’ from an inhaler to antihistamine. But is this all one can do? As one gradually gets better from UC, Crohns, etc, do drainage problems improve, or is there steps one can take to help this condition in the meantime?
    Very best wishes,

It’s 2:18 A.M. – another bad sleep night – so you can probably tell the condition of my gut… yes I am frustrated…tired of the set-backs…feel like I have more of them than I do healing days…yet I started off so well.

I know my story is not unique, and normally I am such a private person and would never reach out like this, but I am desperate.

I started the intro diet August 12th and had IMMEDIATE relief. I knew I had found my answer. I got SCD Lifestyle – Surviving to Thriving as well as the meal plan guides and have followed them religiously. But after 6 weeks have only found three veggies that I can eat (carrots, butternut squash, and green beans.) I have not been able to eat fruit for years because of the sugar. I did ok with the pears but couldn’t tolerate even apples so i gave up on the fruit. I was not able to tolerate yellow squash or zucchini from phase 1 – and feel like if I can’t tolerate those – how can I go on to further phases? I am afraid to try new foods because each time I do I have a negative reaction and it takes 3-4 days to feel better again.

I just started taking enzymes two days ago. They seemed to help – I had no pain from eating, but felt like crap all day yesterday and here I am awake again, with “something” going on in my gut but cannot yet tell what that is going to be…

I needed that video – I am not a quitter – but am very discouraged. I am awaiting my copy of Breaking the Vicious Cycle to arrive and am reading everything from your web site – trying to understand and figure out how to make this work for me…

Thanks for listening to my rant…
