The Importance of a Support Group: How an Inner Circle Can Keep You Alive

On July 23, 2008 I sat alone at my kitchen table with tears in my eyes

I was writing my will… I figured I wouldn’t make it much longer.

Then July 18, 2009 dawned.  And that Saturday, I started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  Just 7-days later, my diarrhea stopped.  Today I’m a whole new man.  What seemed impossible at the time is now a distant memory, but I’ll never forget how alone I felt.  And I’ll never shake that haunting feeling of not knowing who to trust for answers.

I barely made it without support, encouragement, and answers

When you start working to fix your digestive problems, you do your best on your own.  And you might make it.  But the odds are against you.  Often, you’ll need encouragement and support.

But at the very least, you’ll need trusted answers to your burning questions.  Despite your best intentions, there’s times when you need someone to help you get through.  Someone to give you a hug, or give you a boot to the rear… a group of people that have been in your shoes.

Is Leaky Gut Making You Sicker?

But don’t take my word for it…

Last week we sent out a survey to find out if you needed the same support, encouragement, and family I longed for years ago.  The response was overwhelming:

  • 67% Felt all alone because of their digestive problems
  • 71% Found it hard to find support/encouragement from others because no one understands what it’s like
  • 86% Would love a support group, especially when they stumbled along the way
  • And a surprising, 76% have a hard time getting their health questions answered from experienced and trusted sources

Steve and I realize you need something more and it’s time we created a safe place for rockstars like you to come get healthy together.  A community of people just like us working hard to get healthy.  Here’s what some of you asked for in the survey:

“Just having someone to understand what it is like to live with Ulcerative Colitis, I had it 13 years and do not know anyone else that has it or understands what it is.”

“My big problems is… Staying true to myself… I’ve done the diet two times.. I keep failing… And I eat bread and potato. I’m good with the rice, didn’t eat that. My will power is not strong… I love all the post on FB. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do”

“HA!. answers answers answers.. even after ~18 months of hard core dietary effort, i’m still riddled with questions.. having a good resource to work with would certainly help.”

“Many times I just need to be encouraged. It’s up and down. When it’s down I feel like quitting the diet and getting surgery. I just don’t know if I can live like this for the rest of my life. It isn’t much fun. I’ve been doing it for 5 years already.”

“I find the hardest thing is the conflicting information provided by professionals. I can understand why those around me struggle to comprehend what I am going through as they have never experienced it. I just want to make sure I get on and stay on the right track so I can enjoy my life again.”

Can you identify with any of these comments?  Maybe you’ve even had these exact thoughts before?  That’s why I can hardly wait to tell you – this is one of the most exciting announcements we’ve ever had…

I started on the SCD a week ago, and have developed constipation as a result. I did not begin with the chicken and broth. I am eating all the foods in the ok and baking accordingly. I would love to succeed. Can you lend a hand?

Hi Gwen – sorry, we don’t have a way to connect you with people in those areas, but we encourage you to check out SCD groups on sites like Facebook.

Tons of people are following SCD- you might even connect with people via the comments here or on our Facebook page.

Congratulations on your new commitment to your health!
