Meet Mitch, he’s a bodybuilder, in his early 30’s and describes himself as pretty normal. He’s been battling Ulcerative Colitis for a few years and in the past drugs like prednisone had really helped. But when he needed them most they didn’t. And he had to take matters into his own hands.
In the middle of a nasty drug resistant flare, he turned to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. In under 14 days he had already noticed major changes.
“People need to hear more about this diet.”
It’s a disgrace that doctors don’t acknowledge diet plays a role in Ulcerative Colitis.
I’ve done a lot of reading and was skeptical of the things I read, as you should be when researching on the net. I bought Elaine’s book and the scientific stuff made sense. If I can help someone else who is going through this terrible disease, I will.
“I eventually saw a doctor who told me I’m too young for cancer”
My story is, I am a normal, 32-year-old guy (other than the Colitis). When I was about 21 or 22, I started seeing blood in my stool. I was lifting a lot of weights at the time, and put it down to a burst vein or something. I played basketball, raced jet skis, did semi-serious bodybuilding and martial arts. I was a normal guy, and I ate anything and everything.
And I probably just burst a hemorrhoid when lifting. My blood would come and go, but it started to get worse around the age of 26 or 27. When I was 29 I got so sick, and finally saw a gastroenterologist who put me on the meds straight away. I had an iron infusion and felt better immediately. I thought that was the end of it.
“It felt like someone was pouring acid on my ankle”
Not long after I started the meds, I got a pyoderma gangrenosum. As mentioned, I did martial arts, and had played a few sports. The pyoderma was the worst pain I have felt in my life. I was on pain meds all the time and had to dress the wound daily, sometimes twice daily.
I had moved from Australia to Canada with my girlfriend last year, when my Colitis got so bad I was hospitalized. I went from 289lbs at my biggest, down to 205 at one point (remember, I was bulking up for my bodybuilding). I was in the ICU for a week, then the ward for another week. I was put on high doses of Prednisone. Funnily enough, that healed up my pyoderma after over a year of pain and inconvenience.
“I was having bloody diarrhea when I went back to my gastro”
A month or so ago, I started to bleed again and jumped back on the Prednisone. I had a flare about a year ago and got on the Prednisone ASAP and healed up. This time, it didn’t help. I was having bloody diarrhea when I went back to my gastro. By that time I had been on the SCD diet for a few days. Now, I’m still on the Prednisone and Salofalk, but I know the diet is working because I feel a bit different. I don’t feel so bloated and the meds can’t be working that quickly.
“A week and a half after starting the diet I am almost back to normal”
Within a day or two the diarrhea had backed off. Around a week and a half after starting the diet I am almost back to normal in that department. Today, I’m not bleeding and I’m almost considering adding more fiber to my diet to help things out, pardon the pun.
Was it challenging to switch to SCD?
My biggest challenge in following SCD is the fact I mainly ate potatoes, breads, rice and dairy. My favorite foods were pizza, burgers, any fish or chicken and rice, and I was drinking about a liter or two of milk a day. I ate chips, cake, corn, and basically anything that was grain based. I loved chocolate. After every meal I was eating ice cream and cake. SO, basically I ate nothing that was overly good for me.
Looking back on it, the signs were always there. When I was bodybuilding or dieting for a fight, I would eat fish, vegetables and only drink water. My symptoms would go away.
In between all this pain and misery, I was juggling a relationships and work. All I can do is hope it helps others in my position who may be wondering what on earth is happening to their bodies.
