Ahhhh, success stories – my favorite.
One of our core missions is to share powerful, real-life success stories with you that inspire hope…
The kind of stories that inspire people to FINALLY change their diet…
The kind of stories you read when you’re ready to give up…
The kind of stories that help you keep going, if only for just one more day.
And today, we’ve got another that I can’t wait to share with you!
Kara’s story will inspire you with how honest and caring she is. Sure, she wasn’t in the hospital with Crohn’s… but she was sick to her stomach every single day and struggling with bloating, fatigue, and alternating C & D.
Not only that, but she was willing to share the emotional side of things and what it’s really like to change your life, fully choosing health day in and day out.
Kara… you’re amazing! Thank you for being willing to step up and spread awareness about the healing power of eating real food.
Without further ado, here is her story…
I Was Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired
Worrying about my health, spending countless hours surfing the Internet for solutions, obsessing over everything I ate, constantly agonizing over whether I would go to the bathroom the next day…
Just a month ago, this was me. I had been dealing with digestive problems for over six months, and I knew that I needed to make a drastic change. I knew that I could no longer rely on ANYONE else – that includes nutritionists, naturopaths, psychologists, doctors, friends, or family – to help me feel better. It was time to do the real work. It was time I finally took matters into my own hands.
I had been a subscriber to SCD Lifestyle for a few months before I finally decided to try the diet. After reading numerous success stories and feeling a newfound hope and determination to take action, I knew what I had to do. I had to find a diet that worked for me, and SCD has allowed me to do just that. But more importantly, I needed to feel alive again. I couldn’t stand living in a state of anxiety and depression anymore.
Even though I was not diagnosed with a serious illness, (Crohns, Ulcerative Colitis, or IBS) that doesn’t mean I wasn’t sick. I felt sick to my stomach every single day. Bloating had taken over my life. I was experiencing both diarrhea and constipation, fatigue, and I didn’t enjoy life in the way I used to. I could hardly think about anything else but my digestion. I’m in my last year of college, and I felt unable to focus or care about my schoolwork. I started to wonder if I would feel this way forever – if bloating and fatigue and constipation were something I just had to “live with.” Well, I realized very quickly that is not the case!
Once I Began SCD, I Saw Results Immediately
And once I started to feel better, I realized that there is no going back. SCD isn’t just a fad or a diet, it’s a lifestyle. What I love most about this diet is that it is tailored to me. No test or doctor can tell me what I need; my body tells me every day. I’m becoming more and more aware of my reactions to food and how important the relationship is between food and our emotions. For the longest time, I felt like food and I hated each other. I couldn’t figure out what agreed with me and what didn’t. SCD Lifestyle teaches you how to discover your sensitivities and it is way easier than I originally thought.
Beginning SCD was the hardest part: prepping the food for the Intro Diet, buying new utensils, letting go of the foods I was most attached to. I experienced very intense cravings at first, but with each passing day that I resisted those cravings, I felt stronger and stronger. Without the help from Jordan and Steve’s e-book, I really believe I couldn’t have gotten through it. Their step-by-step guide is easy to follow and tells you exactly how to prepare all of the food. But more importantly, they helped me understand why I was feeling certain ways and what to watch out for. I learned that it’s normal to feel a little strange at first and being kind to yourself in the first few weeks is so essential. I truly felt like Jordan and Steve were helping me each step of the way. What I loved most is that they went through it, so they understand what it feels like. In addition, their laid-out meal plans helped me tremendously. I didn’t have to wonder at every meal, “What am I supposed to eat?” They make it that much easier for you to succeed and master Phase 1, which, in my opinion, is the hardest.
I Can Honestly Say That I Feel Like a New Woman…
I feel so empowered and liberated. My friend even told me that I look like I am glowing. 🙂 I took control over my own life and I decided that I would NOT allow my digestive concerns to take the driver’s seat anymore. I treat my body with kindness and respect. When I do sense a reaction (such as bloating) I don’t become angry with my body like I used to. I actually thank it for telling me that something isn’t quite right. That’s the beauty of this diet – you learn how to listen and understand your body’s cues. My body and I have become a team. Now, I know that in order to heal you need to listen close and not see your body/digestion as something outside of yourself. Because it’s an essential part of you. It’s amazing how quickly my body told me that I made the right decision. On Day 2 of the Intro Diet, I woke up and noticed that my bloating had decreased significantly. In fact, it almost felt normal! I was astonished.
I can also say, proudly, that I have already started experiencing “The Perfect Poop!” I didn’t know what an ideal poop was until I looked at the Bristol Stool Chart. I realized that for most of my life, my poops were not ideal. After only a month of being on SCD, my bowel movements are already in the “4” range. That’s pretty incredible, if you ask me!
At first, SCD felt very limiting. It was also extremely hard for me on Thanksgiving to be around all of my family’s traditional food. However, I have completely shifted my perspective. With each new food I try, I am so excited to try different recipes and keep the diet from becoming repetitive. It’s crazy how a little Himalayan sea salt or making your eggs and bananas into pancakes can make a difference!
I may not be a “Tough Case,” but the truth is if I didn’t take action I was only becoming closer and closer to developing a serious illness. And being on SCD inspired me to take action in other aspects of my life, not just my digestion. I sleep more, I quit the job that was causing me so much stress, and I even ended a relationship that I felt was hindering my healing process. I realized very quickly that I have the power to change at any given moment. I won’t take my health for granted anymore. Learning to feel healthy again involves several puzzle pieces… it’s not one-size-fits-all. I encourage you to keep this mindset and keep exploring other options, such as seeing a psychologist or a Naturopathic Doctor, when you feel like other issues may need to be addressed.
I Am So Passionate About Educating Others About Their Health…
And helping them feel better that I am now considering pursuing a career in Naturopathic Medicine. Being sick, and learning how to feel better simply by eating clean, has taught me so much. I know now that I have a gift I need to share with the world.
Don’t give up. Please don’t give up hope, because I am confident that SCD can help you too if you give it a chance.
I remember at the beginning of my diet, when I was still experiencing cravings, I was considering “treating” myself to a frozen yogurt. After all, it was my birthday! But then, I thought to myself… “What if I treated myself completely different than I have in the past? Instead of eating sugar, I treated myself by eating so clean that I achieved a level of health I thought was impossible – that I don’t have to feel guilty anymore?”
That was it for me. That was when I knew. Eating clean and taking care of myself has completely changed my life. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Jordan and Steve and their wonderful book. The guidelines in Elaine’s Breaking the Vicious Cycle are great and have been an extra resource, but they go in such detail that you really don’t have to question anything!
Even If You Haven’t Been Diagnosed with an Illness Yet…
Please don’t ignore the fact that you are feeling sick. You deserve to feel alive, full of energy, and loved. The healing process is painful but once you surpass all of the fears that you thought you’d never be able to get past, I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing else like it.
Trust your intuition. Honor your body. There is another world of health waiting for you! Who knew it could be achieved simply by eating real food?
A very special thank you goes out to Kara for sharing her story!!
Sharing these stories really means a lot to us and we hope that Kara’s courage and strength can inspire others to follow in her footsteps… and more importantly, to NEVER… EVER… GIVE UP.
