5 Die-Off Myths Everyone Needs to Know About

5 die-off myths exposed

Here’s a recent question from Jake about die-off myths:

“I’ve made great progress on the diet. 7 weeks ago I was moody, tired and my bowel movements were all over the map. Almost every area of my life is better, but I’m just not happy yet, I feel like I can’t get over the hump. Every other week I hit a couple day stretch where I feel awful, what is causing this die-off and when is it going to end?”

It could be die-off, but I’ve noticed a recent trend that must be corrected. Just because your symptoms get worse doesn’t mean that you’re having die-off. Most times, your symptoms simply got worse. Some call it a setback or flare, but in general it’s a reaction to something you’ve changed in your treatment plan or a failure to change something.

I’m sure that last statement was confusing for some, so let me break it down for you. You can have reactions from changes like:

Is Leaky Gut Causing Your Die-Off?

  • Altering the dosage of drugs
  • Altering supplements
  • Trying new foods
  • Lifestyle events, changes and toxin exposures
  • And you can have a reaction from the inflammation in your body getting to the point at which it starts to affect you

But first, let’s talk about die-off. In this article, we stated that die-off usually lasts 3-7 days, which is true, but that doesn’t mean that every worsening of symptoms or reaction that lasts 3-7 days is a die-off event.

What Is Die-Off Then??

Die-off is shorthand for a Herxheimer reaction (Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction). This term was coined to describe what Karl Herxheimer saw when he administrated drugs to patients. The reaction is thought to happen when toxins from dying pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites, candida, etc.) overwhelm the body’s abilities to clear them out.

This creates a toxic state in the body, which produces symptoms like:

  • Fever
  • Muscle Aches
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Skin Rashes
  • Excess Mucus Production
  • Brain Fog
  • Increased GI Problems (diarrhea, constipation, etc.)

These symptoms are often reported by many to feel very flu-like or cold-like. Your whole body is generally sluggish and it usually feels as if your body is working harder – almost fighting something.

Why spend so much time on what’s really going on?

Because I hear the term die-off being thrown around way too much these days in situations that are unlikely to actually be die-off. And that’s important because making the correct change for your health is dependent upon the interpretation of what your body is actually trying to tell you.

What Really Causes Die-off?

There seems to be some confusion as to what might actually cause die-off. It’s led to us receiving several emails each week, like:

“I added broccoli and got an immediate die-off.”

“I upped my fat and now I’m having several days of die-off.”

Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I know your body better than you do. But I am going to set the record straight on what is likely going on here.

To cause a die-off reaction, you need to actually make a very substantial change to your treatment plan. Because, remember, die-off is a situation in which the toxins in your body overwhelm the natural ability to clear them.

The changes that might cause die-off are usually:

  • Switching from processed food to a real food diet (death of pathogens by starving)
  • Starting or increasing probiotic dosage (death of pathogens by good soldiers)
  • Starting or increasing dosage of antiparasitic, anti-yeast or antibiotic (death of pathogens by bombing)

In each of these scenarios, the change in treatment will cause substantial changes in gut flora and knock out a big portion of the bad guys. When that happens, they release toxins that need to be excreted by the body. So, can you see how each of the major changes above actually causes a release of toxins?

Let’s look at another example:

Joanna adds avocado because she knows eating good fats could really help her health. Upon introduction, she starts getting an immediate increase in bowel movements from 2 to 5 a day. They are also looser than they’ve been in a long time. After checking around online, she observes that this might just be die-off as a result of introducing more fat and a new food, so she continues eating them thinking that everything will get better soon if she could just push through this setback.

Can you see how she might think based on what she’s researched that she is making the correct choice for her health? Especially when she asks for help and hears back from people “Oh, don’t worry. You’ll be fine, avocados are healthy. It’s just temporary die-off.” It’s likely all of us would keep pushing, never questioning whether or not it could be something else. However, if we thought this symptom change could mean a reaction, it would be easier to slow down or stop it altogether.

5 Die-Off Myths You Need to Know About

I want to set the record straight with 5 very common comments we get that are not die-off.

MYTH 1: “I started [new supplement] and feel worse, I can’t believe I’m getting more die-off”

TRUTH: This is an unfortunate misinterpretation of what your body is trying to communicate. Unless you added an anti-parasitic, anti-yeast, or antibacterial agent, I can almost guarantee that what you are experiencing is a reaction to the supplement. This reaction can be caused by any number of reasons, like the fillers in the supplement, the substance itself, or even the dosage.

MYTH 2: “I added this new food and my symptoms got worse, die-off usually happens when I add new foods”

TRUTH: Not likely. Die-off may have happened when you initially switched to eating SCD, GAPS, or Paleo but it’s not happening now that you’ve been eating this way for a few weeks. If, when adding a new food, your symptoms get worse, then this is a sign that your body is saying, “Hey! Hold on, something isn’t right about this.” The truth is you could have introduced too much of the food too fast and need to slow down a bit or maybe your body isn’t ready to handle it yet and you should try again in a few weeks.

MYTH 3: “Out of nowhere, my symptoms got worse. This must be another round of die-off”

TRUTH: Nope, this is what I was referring to at the beginning of the post: the situation in which upon observing your journal and life you can’t see any specific changes but all of sudden you feel worse. This is not die-off out of the blue. You could have more underlying health problems to fix but if I had to guess it’s actually stress from your life that is overwhelming your body. In general, what it means is that you need rest and/or you’re having a reaction to your current lifestyle, treatment and thought patterns. Stress can be very harmful to our health if not managed regularly.

MYTH 4: “I started to get better on SCD then got worse, now I’m getting more die-off”

TRUTH: Not likely. What is likely is that you haven’t taken the time to customize your diet and test foods like the four horsemen of setbacks. If you’re still very new to SCD, GAPS or Paleo, stop eating all four right away and see what happens. You can always add them back in slowly. The other reaction that could be happening here is that your body is in bad need of a specific supplement and you haven’t figured out what it is yet.

MYTH 5: “I have X pathogen (Candida, Parasites, Bacteria etc.), therefore I get die-off often”

TRUTH: This one is tough, because you could get die-off more often if you were constantly varying your antiparasitic, anti-fungal or antibiotic dosages. But, I’m not aware of any protocols that call for this so I’m guessing you’re not doing it. So, what does this actually mean? It’s a great signal from your body for three things. The first is that what you thought you killed or are killing is actually alive and doing fine. Parasites are the best example, as they have different life cycles and can lay dormant before springing back to life and triggering your symptoms all over again. The second is that you’ve killed or suppressed the bad bugs but you haven’t dialed in your diet and supplements and are now reacting to them. The third and most frustrating is that you actually have a secondary infection of some kind. It’s not very unusual that once your immune system is compromised that you could have picked up several kinds of bugs. In each of these last 3 cases, what you’re experiencing is a reaction and not die-off.

Understanding the Different Kinds of Clues From Your Body

As you can see, die-off is a nuanced subject and not always straightforward. But hopefully this article has shown you where you might have been misinterpreting some clues your body was giving you.

Understanding these subtle clues is often the difference between feeling amazing and quickly switching to the next fad treatment before feeling really good. If you need more help listening to your body and understanding what the subtle clues are telling you, we’ve put together a webinar specifically for this reason:

Stop Ignoring Your Body: How Subtle Clues are Telling You Exactly What to Do Next…

Here are just a few things we’ll show you on the webinar:

  • How to decode your poop to know exactly what’s broken
  • Why cramping is a dead giveaway and the specific steps you need to follow for relief
  • If gas is normal and what it means if you’re not healing
  • How to quickly come up with THE RIGHT TWEAK to stop nagging symptoms fast, through our “hot seat” tweaking sessions
  • How to understand the subtle clues from your body so deeply that your next steps will become obvious

We even share a quick, at-home test you can try immediately if you’re having stomach pain and our bonus 5-day emergency diet handout detailing the exact foods we eat to relieve symptoms in 5 days (this is something we’ve been testing for years).

I was wondering if what I am experiencing now is a “die-off”.

I am female, 30 yrs, 94 lbs. 5’2″ in height, small framed body just to give you a picture.

I am suffering from candidiasis and I noticed it just last February. I had vaginal yeast infection and was given canesten (clotrimazole) by my gyne. I decided to check on the root cause of my candida infection and have some blood works done. I am not diabetic nor close to pre-diabetic which i good as doctor says candida feeds on sugar. What I do notice is my highly elevated cholesterol level, 240.85 in total, 214.95 of which is ALDL. I started taking 20mg of Rosuvastatin every night in the past week and 1000mg of Vitamin C and Glutathione in the morning.

Starting the 2nd day of the regimen, I noticed having diarrhea and some body aches. I just continue thinking the meds broke down my cholesterol but the symptoms are becoming worse each day as I continue the meds and supplements. I suffer severe abdominal cramping and stomach pain, muscle aches, on-set of fever brain fog and sore throat. When sore-throat began, my water intake became less frequent and so I was rushed to emergency and was dextrosed for rehydration. I was also given some meds thru IV like oemeprazole and buscopan for the stomach pain and cramps and paracetamol for fever.

I was home after about 6hrs. and researched on my symptoms. At first I was researching about gastroenteritis since the doctor gave me that as diagnosis. But as I dig deeper about Statins. I read somewhere that it is also antifungal and can cause death to candida.

So I was wondering if all these things I feel after all is a “die-off” symptoms and not because of gastroenteritis. I was also clueless on how I could have the latter since they did another blood tests and everything is normal. I have no bacterial infection. ER doctor said it may be viral like colds it just so happen that it affects my digestive and not my respiratory tract.

Hoping to hear an answer. 🙂

    • Avatar

HI Elaine – sorry to hear all that. Yes, it could very well be die off. Statins can kill of the yeast and then the body is left to get rid of them. If it becomes too much for your detox system to bear at once, we get sick (headaches, chills, diarrhea, etc) in an effort to help clear the infection. More rest, fluids and time will be your best bet to recover quickly.

      • Avatar

Thanks Lori! I am actually feeling better now though I still have the unusual stomach cramps. I started taking again the statin but with lesser dosage at 10mg. I don’t want to be dependent to it so I also changed to a more healthier diet. I am giving myself at least 3 months to just lower and stabilize my cholesterol level then I will switch to a more holistic approach.

It relieves me that what I had is a “candida die-off” already since I was also considering to make a doc appointment and take another meds for the candida. But since all these happened already. Let’s see if my body gets better with the statins along with the candida diet.

Hi- I started a treatment protocol for adrenal fatigue and yeast (not much changes in diet as i was already paleo- but added new probiotics) last thursday. On Saturday I got a sore throat, lost my voice, achy, and a massive increase in anger/irritability. Is this likely die- off from the probiotics??

    • Avatar

HI Avril – a change in diet or the addition of supplements can both cause die-off. It’s hard to say exactly what caused it, but we do suggest starting slow with probiotics and working your way up the dose on the bottle or the one recommended by your practitioner.

    Hi !
I’ve been doing colon hydrotherapy for the last 2 weeks and have changed my diet to help battle obvious candida issues (as seen during colonics as well as change in various other parts of body including a slight change in vaginal discharge but not yeast infection , not eczema but other patchy dry areas of skin and a flaky scalp ..) as well as it was evident I was quite toxic ..so helping to bring my body back to an alkaline state.

For the sake of convo : my 3rd colonic session happened on Friday ..by Monday as the day progressed I came down with flu-like symptoms ..body aches , chills , fever , head ache. I put myself to bed early and got a good nights rest.

Today(Tuesday) I woke up feeling a bit better but congested in my head (ears and nose) but none of the symptoms from the night before. I had my 4th colonic session today so too soon to see if that helps release anything but beginning to suspect this could be the result of Die Off symptoms??

    • Avatar

HI Candra – it’s hard to say! In theory, you’d think the die off wold have been more likely to happen on the first one and not the third…
However, you did the right thing by getting more rest and remember to drink plenty of fluids as well.

Hi, i have a number of health issues i have strugfled with for uears. I jave had some success of late with removinf root canaled tweth and befinninf the root cause protocol. I jave a alkalinizeinf filter o run my RO water through to add minerals back it. I also add mag water ro it, noron water and a pinch od Himalayan salt. I recently gained access to kangan water amd jave been drinking 9.0 water for a week. The last few days i starred feeling sluggish and more stomacj distress than usual. Today i actually tjougjt i picked up a viral infection going around nut then i saw a 2 inch paradite in the toilet. Is it lossivle for the alkaline water kill off parasites? I actuall did a cmparasite cleanse anout 4 months ago. I really dont feel lime eating and am bloated. Is the alkaline water distressing my digestion or is it pissivle it is killing off parasites? Anything i can do to eliminate the dieing beasts?

    Hi Lori

I have been taking natural para cleansing supplements for 3 months now, however, due to lack of finances was unable to purchase a new lot for nearly 3 weeks. Early last week i commenced them again (but on a lesser dose) and the other day used apple cider vinegar on some grilled fish i ate. The following day was like i was coming down with the worst flu ever and i spent the rest of the day in bed. Not only did i continue to take my supplements but thought it was a good idea to take paracetamol for the muscle aches and pain too.

Later that night i got even worse breaking out in a massive sweat in bed, heart racing and feeling like i was free falling. I then started to break out in staph like spots on my arm and shoulders (these had been building for days).

With no sleep the next day was not much better, a few loose stools but nothing notable, the sweats stopped but a dull headache, lethargy and residual aches remain. The staph spots are still there but no longer inflamed.

I was wondering if this is in line with die off? Historically i have a chronic issue with recurrent threadworms and increasing food intolerances (especially spinach & similar greens). I thought things were improving but now this, im still not able to tolerate many probiotics either and am not sure what to do. Is it time to consider a GAPS Diet?. Thanks for any thoughts or input you may have 😉

So I’ve read this article because I have been feeling a bit concerned. I recently took two doses of albenza for parasites. I just took my second dose exactly a week ago. I feel like I have cleared out and I was feeling fine, but just 3 days after taking my last dose I began to feel really bloated, gassy, and have abdominal pain. I’m not sure what is going on but I have changed my diet drastically. I am eating more greens, I have taken out bread and refined sugar, and am also taking DE, vitamin C, and black walnut hull and wormwood. I have not completely taken out carbs. I am also eating organic beef and chicken. Any thoughts on what I can be going through? Also, I took a stool test, blood test, and urine test and all came out negative for parasites. Really looking forward to your insight!!

    • Avatar

HI Rebecca- it sounds like your body is just adjusting to all the new changes. We’d suggest more water and rest…and also make sure the supplements don’t have any harmful ingredients (like sugar). If you continue to feel sick, you can try backing off the supplements (especially the walnut) by half the dose and see how you do with that.

  7. Avatar

So if methyl b’s get your messed up methylation cycle going which turns homocysteine in cysteine, which gets your detoxification system going, that’s not considered die off if you start having major moods and start feeling sick??? you said supplements can’t contribute to die off. I disagree and would like to hear your thoughts.

      • Avatar

My experience says otherwise. I cannot take methylcobalamin. If I take only that, I am a major mess. Every time I try, I am so bad I have to stop it because I’m close to being admitted. Methylfolate does the exact thing to me. Those supps are so powerful to a clogged methylation pathway. It gets everything moving. Plus my functional Dr. said it can happen.

Thank you for this reply! I pulled back on a para cleanse and felt really good. Began some new probiotic and Wo. Things are wonky. But I know to keep on and let my body adjust. Your replies to everyone help so much. Thank you again for this!

Hello I’m 27 yrs old and I have been diagnosed with SIBO it’s taken over my life ! I have a 8 year old little girl and I don’t know where to start my anxiety is over the roof! And these bornorygmi noises are uncontrollable …

Hello! Recently I picked up on a key word. Parasite. My diet has a large quantity of raw fish and sushi and somehow became a aware and concerned about parasites. Long story short, I bought organic cranberry juice because I read it kills parasites. I’ve been drinking it each morning when I wake. A little after the first day I started noticing hives on my arms and legs. Nothing serious, but definitely noticeable. I work for a provider so I understand I should consult a dermatologist but honestly I feel intuitively that it’s caused by the change in diet. And before I rack up medical bills I’d like to know what you think.

Hi, I recently added kombucha to my diet, and since then my face, neck and chest have been breaking out. I don’t feel sluggish or have other symptoms ie digestive. Actually, I feel pretty good. Would you assume it’s more likely that I’m having a reaction to the product itself perhaps the caffeine or fermentation? I consume other probiotics like kefir, I eat a healthy whole food diet… Anyway, just curious. I can cut back in the kombucha, but I love it. Lol

    • Avatar

Hi Tammy – you could be reacting to the histamines in Kombucha, as it is a fermented beverage. Or, you may be having a reaction to the probiotics and yeast cultures. Try consuming a smaller amount and see how you do!

hi I have had ibs for many years I think I might always of had it ! anyways roll on to my 39th year and I’m still suffering, I had complylobactor in 2015 and developed autoimmune issues after and had a test for allergies this year , a private one which showed I’m intolerant to gluten , wheat, all dairy, lactose, all wine, grapes, blueberries, swede and mushrooms so I was encouraged to try a 2 month course of 1×20 billion probiotic once daily and 2x candigone tablets daily, oh and no sugar ! so week one all good but by the end of it worst constipation ive experienced for a long time. anyway I had a colon cleanse pill which did the job and luckily and over two days my stomach was all over the place, then I woke up this morning and the worst headaches and lethargy, ache all over, . it was all I could do to drag my dogs to the park that once back I slept for several hours, anyway I managed to make a fruit smoothie and think things might be improving, could this be die off or do you think the pills don’t suit me , I’m concerned I’m making health worse any ideas x

  12. Avatar

    Hi there,

After having some bad digestive issues since summer (trapped wind pains, constipation, etc) I started a powerful probiotic at the weekend. After initially feeling better, I got some serious bloating last night (albeit not as long lasting), some dull tummy pains in the night and woke feeling quite flushed and nausea. My urine is also a stronger color. I was losing weight but since probiotic, seem to be putting it back on again slowly (where I’m guessing nutrients are now getting better absorbed)

Does this sound like die-off? Should I continue probiotic daily or cut back to once every 2 days to ease up die off so quickly?

    Thanks for your help.

    • Avatar

HI John – We’d suggest cutting back the probiotic to half the dose you were taking and see how that helps. Die off typically happens when there is a major shift in diet or when you’re killing off bad bugs (like in a candida protocol). It’s hard to say if it’s dieoff or not, but get plenty of rest and water anyway.

      • Avatar

Thanks so much Lori, I’ve cut it back to every other day for the meantime. I figured it may take slower to colonise but will still get the job done.

One thing that seems to have crept in is Brain Fog, is this a known side effect from starting and will it ease soon? Just wanted to know if you’ve had experience of this before and is it something that shifts once things are better inside?

        Many thanks

So is it a flare up from herx or leaky gut

Coconut oil is extremely antimicrobial. Laurie acid and monolaurin and caprylic acid are some of the most antimicrobial substances available. Eat to much too quickly like for example going from none to 3 tbsp a day and you could easily experience herxing.

This is true of any substance that has antimicrobial properties and many nutrients and herbs and certain foods do.

Hi, I just introduced VSL #3 Monday and also Monday my gastro prescribed me 10 days of diflucan because even on a paleo diet and some supplements I am still having yeast infections and oral thrush. I woke up feeling better this morning but then this afternoon feeling a little raw and a little more discharge vaginally. Could this possibly be a die off? Thanks and God Bless:)

I’ve been on the SIBO diet for 4 weeks and have been using Oregano daily (x5), along with allicin (x3) as per my nutritionists recommendation. I also take magnesium and digestive enzymes. It’s a low carb diet with some prebiotic foods to allow the Oregano to kill the bacteria. However I am 4 weeks in and I still have terrible acne and bloating – 2 symptoms that are my predominant SIBO symptoms. Is there any reason that I’m not getting any better? I thought I would have had some kind reprieve by now, does this mean the treatment isn’t working?

Any help would be greatly received.

Interesting article. I started eating more healthily a few weeks ago and I’m not sure if I’m experiencing a die off right now or not. I switched to only whole grain food and have been adding dried herbs, cayenne powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, seeds, nuts, coconut oil and lemon juice to it. I’ve slowly increased the amounts, especially of coconut oil, cayenne powder and dried herbs. Yesterday I started puking and needing to go to the toilet urgently at the same time. I puked today and have been producing a lot of mucus and I have a bad headache. I’m honestly not sure if this is just a bad cold or a dye off event.

HI Chris – it’s hard to say what it is exactly.
“Some of you who make this diet switch will experience feelings like:

      •increased diarrhea
      •joint aches
      •general uneasiness

These are all signs of what is commonly called die-off. When making a drastic change in diet, your body has to switch lots of internal processes to be able to handle this new way of living.

Sometimes when this switching happens you temporarily feel worse. If this is you, drink lots of water, plan for extra sleep and do your best to rest. It will typically get better around the 3rd day.

I started taking serrapeptase a few days ago, after researching natural treatments for inflammation. I am having pain and stiffness 11 weeks after rotator cuff arthroscopy. I saw my surgeon last week, & his solution was yet another -which would be the third- 3 week course of prednisone. I don’t think this is the answer, & am afraid of damaging my body further.

I have noticed fatigue, looser bowel movements, & an increase/change in my pain since starting serrapeptase 2 says ago- could this be die- off?

I have a history of IBS, which has improved with age. I am a 51 yo womn, post menopausal, hypothyroid. Thank you.

    • Avatar

HI Joanna – thanks for reaching out! It’s hard to know what may be causing those symptoms, but regardless the treatment is generally the same. Changing your diet is going to be imperative for starters. I’m not totally familiar with that product, but you may try taking half the recommended dose and seeing how that goes. It sounds like you have quite a bit of inflammation in the body and we’d recommend by starting here: https://healthygut.com/scd-quick-start-guide/

Hey – Candida is a normal thing for this lacto-vegan. Stressful times always cause a little sugar intake, and if your like me you can’t just eat one of the new organic sweet munchables at Costco. I try to keep my grams of natural sugar, either fructose from natural sources, organic cane sugar, or whatever natural sugar they use in these organic healthy treats down to 25 grams a day. So whole food natural sugar to 25 gr. can still cause a latent sugar population, and when I feel a possible scratchy throat coming on, which never seems to get there, I make my own capsule of oil of oregano (10 drops), and olive oil (10 drops) as a carrier. I swear I haven’t been sick in at least 4 years. However after stressful times and getting sometimes over me natural sugar quota and start to get sick, I take the oil of oregano and get a candida die-off always the same way. Undercover cover pimples at usually the same place on my face, and depending on how fast the die-off, there can be two or three on my face, and take days to go away. Tough on the vanity issues, but oil of oregano is key for a fast candida melt down.

Not the only one suffering! At least I’m not alone in this.

SIBO, leaky gut, slow digestion, overall weakness, anxiety when I go down. Upper endoscopy scope showed I had gastroparesis and doctor wants me to consider med with side effect could stop o heart. No way. Going to mayo clinic next week see if they have any ideas.

All this started in 2013 went down with flu type fevers for 5 days. Have had a abnormal fatigue and comprised strength since.

Currently having reaction to what I don’t know. Feelings of weakness, racing anxiety, pressure in chest. I was doing okay for a while on SCD then bam going down with bad anxiety and weakness. Anxiety is so bewildering. I am under no emotional stress just all physical. My poor immune system and liver please help me.

Hi lindsay – I’m so sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, but I’m glad you’re reaching out for help.

Are you eating enough carbs? Carbs can be hard to get in in adequate quantities in the early stages of SCD if you don’t make a dedicated effort but they are crucial for managing your mood. If you’re having anxiety, you might need more carbs. Carb ideas for early phases of SCD: butternut squash, apple sauce, pear sauce, honey, carrots, zucchini, grape juice, bananas.

i make my own water kefir at home. I don’t use granulated sugar….I use whole foods and minerals to boost the grains, but its been giving my aweful head fog, head cold feeling, feeling like coming down with the flu. Usually these side effects within 2-3 hours after drinking a bottle I make, but then disappears. Also, one thing I noticed has helped me with candida issues over the years is sticking to not fruit or veggies. I eat simple carbs (potatoes and white rice. Sounds boring, but it works. I don’t get or feel like I use to. Potatoes and rice gives me a complete protein. I get minerals from water kefir and unrefined sea salt. It has not failed me in any way, other than this water kefir making me have ‘die-off’ related symptoms….I think.

Hi. Been struggling with Gut issues for 17 years. all kinds of tests and docs with no answers.Food allergies, terrible stomach pain. bloating, gas constipation Cant handle probiotics or fiber. Now pretty sure it is SIBO/Methane. Going on a super restricted diet. of Elemental Powder mix (ND supervised) for 2 weeks…no solid food. I am already super paleo-ish. Broth, organ meats, fish, eggs (all organic).. a few berries. Some cooked veggies but can tolerate very few . No nuts, no dairy, no beans, (mostly no) grains, (Occasional rice), no sugar. (Will follow elemental with SCD… I already have your book)
I can handle 2 weeks without “food” but the “die- off” is what I am afraid of. Anything i have tried for the last 17 years that can cause even a moderate die off causes me horrible depression. I mean total dysfunctional depression. IT does not end in 3-5 days…it goes on and on. I literally hmm on the floor wanting to die. Phase II of liver is suppressed. Hypo thyroid (low T3). Low motility in Gut. Hiatal hernia. Doc says possible inflammation in liver causing neurological symptoms… any ideas or suggestions to get ready for this…other than Glutamine? OR how to cope – physically? Saunas? Colonics ? How often? I meditate and do yoga and go to the Gym as much as possible. Thank you!

Can candida die off occur when using topical anti fungal intravaginally ( or garlic intravaginally) for vaginal yeast infection or is it just present for candida diet?
I used topical anti fungal treament for vaginal yeast infection and 1 hr later – I got bloating and and little itchness or rash on my thumb.

    Is this die off?

I’ve been oil pulling with coconut oil for the past 5-6 days. I read someone say online that starting OP could cause a die off reaction. 3 days ago I got my menstrual cycle and what seems to be a yeast infection. I figured it was one since I have been eating more soy than usual lately and had tons of pizza (with mushrooms and soy) the days before the infection. I’ve also stopped taking milk thistle for about 2 months now and I have been running longer than usual in non-cotton underwear. I’ve never had a yeast infection and I am a pretty healthy vegan except that I do have soy and lots and lots of fruit. Ive been eating only anti-candida for 3 days and taking garlic supplements and milk thistle and having coconut milk along with my oil pulling but now I’m reading about die off and am not sure whether I’m having a die off from the oil pulling or if I’m having a yeast infection. I read that die offs and yeast infections can be confused, though I don’t have headaches or any other die off symptoms besides fatigue. I’m afraid if I continue eating this way it will get worse or that if I go back to how I was eating it will stop my progress and get worse.

After reading all the posts I noted many people doing all kinds of things not consistent with scd approach . Eg alcohol, dope a huge variety of various medications and suppliments and much more. I think it would be hard to know if scd was successful unless one follows it closely. My own experience has been extreme with inability to eat at all for 9 days and then only coconut for a while. Now I am following scd with some modification as I really can’t eat fruit or drink fruit juice. I am observing the 4 day rule when introducing something new. I am leaving out the four horsemen and will slowly introduce those one at a time to see if they work or not. This has lead to success. After 5 years of misery hundreds of miracle suppliments looking at one or other issue Eg sibo candida ibs interstitial cystitis fibro myalgia and others I realise it doesn’t matter what you call it or how it manifests, I was just functioning all wrong and each new thing was just a deepening of the sick system. I remember a wise person
saying if looking for water you dig one deep hole this will be better than having a paddock full of shallow holes. I think it’s better to look at one system and follow it religiously until you are sure it doesnt work. And that’s why I Will stay with scd . No more miracle cures just strong will and dedication to healing all of me.
    Good luck to everyone

Thank you for this article! I found it while searching for symptoms of coconut oil related die off, and I’m honestly not sure if that’s what I’m experiencing and what to do about it. I used to have coconut oil growing up with no issues. I thought it would be a good idea to try it again now that I have SIBO (I’m on year three now, two rounds of xifaximin last spring didn’t cure it). I’ve taken a tablespoon of it three times this week, and each time I felt a little worse a little more quickly after taking it. Usually nausea, feeling slightly feverish, headache. The third time was last night and I was so nauseous I had to lie down. My forehead felt a bit hot, and I got a headache which I still have after 18 hours. I tried a little workout today but that temporarily brought the nausea back. Any advice? Is this actually a sign that it’s working and I should take another dose when I feel better, or avoid the stuff? Also, I know coconut oil is used to treat candida overgrowth, for which I match all the symptoms to a T, but both doctors I saw told me there is no such thing. My SIBO diagnosis was a hydrogen breath test in May 2015, and it was 49 ppm after 20 min. (Lactulose) and 115 ppm after 40 min, and then they stopped the test.

Hi Chelsea – it sounds like you could be experiencing symptoms of die-off. If it is die-off, it should clear up soon. You can manage your reactions by lowering your dose by half and slowly working back up. Getting plenty of rest and water will also help. If you aren’t feeling better in a few days, please see your doctor!

Recently I started feeling like I was invaded by something, or possibly multiple somethings. Physically, I’ve always kind of suffered from allergies to gluten, sulphites, sulfates and chlorine because all of these things very sneakily find their way into almost everything, but I felt a different kind of sickness and started suspecting parasites could be a culprit. It started with my immune system being all over the place; 2 months straight of sneezing for 20 minutes after waking up and violent sneezing fits throughout the day, a couple times with nose bleeds; random skin rashes, bumps and eczema flaring up; excessive desire to do nothing and be nothing; some very intense moments in the bathroom in which my body was clearly getting rid of something malefic; and finally, a few suspect looking things swirling around the toilet bowl has led me to think I have been invaded.
The good news is I’ve been gluten free for 6 years and eaten a diet high in vegetables, healthy proteins, supplements and superfoods. The bad news is I have eaten a lot of sushi, rare meats and have been a high functioning alcoholic.
I think the initial round of “die offs” (that led me to think I have parasites) actually occurred because I neglected to eat while drinking heavily. And honestly, I continued this fairly unhealthy trend because it did cause something to die off and vacate fairly immediately… But I know that whatever isn’t good for me is probably better for the invaders in the long run, so I started trying other (healthier) aggressive methods.
I started eating a lot of raw garlic, ginger, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, kale beets quinoa and kimchi, stayed away from sweets, meats and dairy. I started taking about 1-3 capsules of oregano oil a day along with vitamin B. I did oil pulling with coconut oil and oil of oregano. I drank carrot juice with lemon, tumeric and ginger. I avoided everything delicious this holiday season, smoked a lot of weed, drank a lot of water and was in bed by 7pm most nights.
For the first few days of 2016 I felt like death and it was like I was in survival mode. I had headaches, chills, sweats, nightmares, violent bodily functions followed by a lack of functions but a lot more suspect looking things exiting me. I was unable to do anything besides lay around, my muslces were completely worn out, I had random skin reactions, swollen lymph nodes, sharp pains in my right side above the hip, my bones and joints were even cracking and everything was a blur.
I had about 3 days of all that at varying degrees, then surprisingly quickly it all got easier and I’ve been feeling much better. I know that more is still ahead but for now though I’m going to take it reasonably easy. I didn’t really know what I was doing when I did everything at once, it was kind of just instinctive… Anyway that’s been my experience, I wish everyone all the best in their journey of health

die-off is certainly hit or miss with telling if it is or not…I read a comment on coconut oil above and elsewhere that yea it can cause die-off symptoms. My question is – how quickly? Usually when I eat a spoonful of virgin coconut oil, I feel weird in my stomach and head shortly afterwards, like 5 minutes. Is this die-off?

I started having problems in september as I got dizzy and foggy at the same time while sitting at work. I figured it was metal toxicity through research and had hair analysis. it showed high copper and super high zinc. Through dmpsmy finctional.dr found elevated mercury but was only a 10. I had 5 chelations and mild improvement. I changed to a high protein and vegetable diet and did ok. Now 2 weeks ago I drank bolthouse farms daily greens juice and it mobilized a ton of I dont know what yet. Since it made me feel a bit worse I went to the dr and they gave me vitality (vitamin iv). Not only did it mobilize but I.excreted tons of toxins I dont know yet. Four days later bad flu symptoms appeared. Then my body auto detoxed again that day and expelled tons. By auto detox I mean I felt my body pull toxins out of my muscles and almost dump it in my stomach. (Weird) Needless to say right. after I get like a blood rush from head to toe almost like shaking for 20-30 seconds which is scary and then Im an anxiety nut for a few minutes until I calm down as I dont know how my body will respond. Trust me the rush is not anxiety. Right after that I smell mad fumes for awhile. My body has auto detoxed 2 more times but since I didnt drink a lot of fluids I didnt expel a ton so I wouldnt lose more weight. I have been dealing with this 2 weeks worse as before it was literally all in my head with dizziness, headaches, fogginess. I have insane symptoms like huge amounts of fumes coming through my nose especially detox time. So bad it burns and it feels like blowing through my nose and mouth. They are burning smells, sweet smells, food smells, and others I dont know what. I now get flu symptoms and aches daily but not as bad as the last 2 where I went to ER because pain and burning were so bad. Ive done as much research as I can and think possibly candida and leaky gut but one symptom particular has me intrigued. I have at times a sweet metal tongue. The only correlation is zinc toxicity and im waiting for my ceruplasmin test to come back in 3 days. It also has the same exact Isymptoms as candida and can cause metal fume fever which is the bad flu symptoms. I will soon be tested for candida, leaky gut, lyme, and anything else I can think of because its nuts. I also wonder if maybe I had lots of hidden mercury that was pulled through the juice I drank. I have lost weight and have to eat lots to maintain. I will continue to eat bland until i figure out why I keep detoxing and I dont want a damn (die off) or flu issue by eating anything else. I have never had any issue like this before. I have a lot of questions for my doctor but as I am more fatigued I dont think I can handle anymore chelation. Anybody have any thoughts as I have never been this scared. When I try to explain this to family they believe me but say its crazy as no one knows why.

Hi Matt – we’re so sorry to hear what you’ve been through. That is definitely unusual. Because you think you may be dealing with metal or zinc toxicity, we think it is really important you keep working with your doctor. Maybe someone in the comments can shed some light for you. Either way, I hope you’re feeling much better very soon.

Do probiotics often cause die-off? I have never had much success with trying probiotics, but I have recently been reading the benefits of Soil Based Organisms. I purchased Prescript Assist and have been taking 1/2 capsule for 3 days. I’ve been having lots of bloating, gas, and difficult (but frequent) bowel movements. I read that this happens a lot when people start but will pass. Would you both agree?

    • Avatar

Hi Alyeska – yes we think any big change in diet or new supplement, especially a supplement like Prescript Assist, can cause die-off. We think Prescript Assist is a great supplement though, so we encourage you to stick with it for a few more days and see if those die-off symptoms go away. Hope this helps!

Hi Samson – we’re really sorry you’re experiencing these symptoms.

Energy drinks are not SCD legal and we don’t advise their use.

We recommend you consult your doctor regarding the chills you’re experiencing though, as symptoms of die-off shouldn’t last as long as you’re describing.

We all hope you’re feeling better soon.

So, would you think that drinking 4 cups of strong ginger tea would be the cause of a die-off/herx or could it have been the 2 hours I spent in 98 degrees, mowing my huge yard? Something caused a major reaction and I was down for 14 hrs with throbbing headache behind my eyes and in my temples, major sinus pressure, chills, and hot flashes with sweating, and a general shaky feeling all over my body. My herxes usually last 8-12 hrs. I do test positive for lyme and babesia (so I guess I have things to kill), but no symptoms other than thyroid issues and reacting like this to potent antimicrobials (like neem) sometimes. We also had toxic mold for years, although, apparently, my body does detox black mold. I wish I could pinpoint what did this to me. If it’s the tea, I would drink much less or avoid it for now.

    • Avatar

Hi Kim – it sounds like either of those could have brought on the symptoms you’re describing.

We recommend you try drinking the tea on a day you don’t work outside and see if a similar reaction occurs, or eliminate the tea and see if you feel better.

Hope this info helps and you’re feeling better soon!

I have read that for some people taking things to detox them, especially in relation to virus, bacteria, & candida, can have “die off reactions” or whatever you want to call them for more than a week. The worse or longer you’ve been sick, the longer it will take to get well. Everyone is not the same. You can get worse, before you get better. Whenever, I do coconut oil pulling or even Nascent Iodine drops (only one a day) it kicks my butt BIG time. My chiropractor says that means it’s working. I had a chiropractor tell me, that when he was in school, he decided to do a detox. Well, he said, it went on for months. and he thought he was going to die. He lost a lot of weight, felt gawd awful, and continued through it anyway. He said, it took 3 months of H*ll to bring him to good health. So, telling people die off only lasts a short time is not true. Whatever the name is, the body can react very intensely to a change or detox. Trust me, I know…

Great article, thanks! Ha, I was all skeptical like “I’m just making a fuss” and then read those three points about what would actually cause a die off reaction and was like, “I have done all 3 of those at once”! That would explain how weird I’m feeling! I’m going for a somewhat alternative protocol after much research, because the conventional low carb thing was destroying me. I have a history of anorexia so my body does not want to be deprived of carbs right now. I am currently experimenting with the potato diet. This involves eating just potatoes for about 3 days each week and healthy foods the rest of the week. No grains, refined sugar or cow’s dairy and no carbs combined with fats or protein. I am taking supplements and anti everythings, started with coconut oil and cinnamon, zeolite and other stuff. I feel kind of better and kind of worse. I think something good is happening though because I had some energy today and my cravings for junk are now manageable. Possibly for the first time in my life!! If this continues to work I will report back in the hope of helping other people who the normal stuff doesn’t seem to work for. I also have hypothyroid/adrenal/liver problems which are being very stubborn so this could be a long haul. Thanks for this info.

Thank you so much for the informative article. I’ve had extremely hard time fighting candida during a long recovery of many years by eating protein and vegetables, taking probiotics slowly, and avoiding all sweets or fruits which always grow candida. I also know that whenever I get into a food that has an adverse effect on my candida, I experience several symptoms not mentioned that’re caused by die-off and contribute to my feeling bad: hair loss, dry skin, numbness in my extremeties, and severe depression, all of it due to toxicity from die-off. The problem is I have a extreme case of leaky gut and, after completing a probiotic regime to rid myself of relapsing illness and CFS, I’ve developed severe adrenal fatigue and whenever I try to control my candida, I also must take extreme measures to never overdo any probiotic or anti-fungal agent or I will take a hit on my adrenals, further complicating the process of controlling candida. It’s been a long hard battle, but I always feel like I can recover from illness by knowing what’s causing it and recognizing the symptoms, even when I’m in the middle of it. Thank you for this article!

I’ve had gastrointestinal problems since 2011 now, I was initially diagnosed with helicobacter, over the course of 6months after that diagnosis I was given 3 heavy duty courses of antibiotics to take, each time my condition become gradually worse. The only good news was the helicobacter had gone.. The doctors passed me off as being an IBS sufferer and gave me an impressive prescription list to take for the rest of my life.

I wasn’t happy with this so I visited a bioresonance practitioner in 2013 who narrowed my condition down to dysbiosis and candida overgrowth and gave me a diet to follow. The results were initially really good I came off all meds but the symptom that worsened was excessive stomach gas.

3 weeks ago I decided to try out the SCD diet. Up to now all that’s happened is an even more increase in excess stomach gas. It’s also brought on bouts of diarrhoea and constipation. Is this normal to have this elevation of symptoms and side effects 3 weeks into the diet?!

        Thanks for the reply, Lori,

I stuck to the diet even though I was feeling terrible, aching all over lethargy, feeling low in my mood etc. I incorporated apple cider vinegar and glutamine to my diet the day I first left a message on here and found it helped a lot. I have noticed a reduction I stomach gas and mild constipation. This also gives me more lower abdominal/intestinal pressure and sensitivity. I have also noticed a reduction in pain from in my joints that I’ve suffered from for a while too.

I think it’s going to be a long process, but I do feel as though I’m on the right track and have a bit of light at the end of the dark tunnel I’ve been in lately.

I started the Candida diet last week. Now it has been 14 days.

Frist 6 days, I strictly ate only cooked vegetables. The most luxury food i ate was home made hummus with a whole raw garlic blended and lots of olive oil, and of course, fresh organic lemon juice.
From the 7th day, i started to eat seafood (fish, shrimp, squid once, but nothing with shell). For breakfast I usually take a big cup of psylium husk drink 40-50 minutes before eating water boiled eggs (though one morning i ate a tea tree oil fried egg with a piece of thumb sized ginger sliced). since 3 days ago, i have also added 20 120-sized shrimps. For about 5 days, i have been drinking a tsp of turmeric in water with some both in the morning and evening. And i take tablet/capsules of Vc, Pantothenic Acid, calcium, grapeseed, milk thistle, billberry fruit extract, Ve, Probiotics, Bee propolis and L-carnitine.

As a result, i feel clearer in my head, less lethargy and more energetic among others.

But…. something is bugging me, my lip fungal is back – 2 episodes in a row with only a few days break in between. I wonder what went wrong? Is my diet working? What did i eat wrong, and what did i not eat/do enough. Oh, yeah, i tried to eat raw garlic with water, i vomited the 2nd and 3rd time, after that i didn’t try again.

Here in China (where i reside), there is no instructor for candida-diet, or any doctor of the like. I don’t know where to seek help. Could you kindly give me a hand?

Thank you very much in advance for your time and kind help.

    Warm regards,

    Hi guys,
I have a 17mnth old boy, Roki, he had a rocky start. Hypoxia at birth, severe CP. Anyway, he contracted Psuedomonas and was heavily treated by antibiotics. We got rid of the bug via bacteriophage. But, his gut has been seriously affected and he has a high candida growth. So, we started him on fermented foods about two weeks ago, juice of saurkraut, beet kvass, goats kefir and whey. We also bought a milking goat and will give him the milk a soon as we have it tested. He has had a fluctuating fever for the last week, it sits between 38-39.8 in the daytime and seems to go overnight, he is alert and awake and doesn’t seem otherwise unwell. He is a bit constipated and has a red sunburn like rash around his eyes and on cheeks. Is it common to have a fever for that long? We have continued to give him the fermented foods and we are giving him chicken stock whilst he copes with this. My only concern was the prolonged fever, any thoughts on that please? What can I give him to relieve the symptoms? I have been giving him green tea…
    Hope you can help,
    Thank you

    Hi everyone,
I would really appreciate any insight on my case. I am 32 and have experienced lethargy, brain fog, overly frequent urination, cold and low senility in my feet, stomach bloating and excess gas as long as I can remember. Chocolate and nuts were some of the worst culprits for my excess gas…. I actually thought it was all normal as I can’t remember ever feeling different, and I was told by a doctor 10 years ago (when I complained of perpetual tiredness) that I was fine…. 10 months ago I started taking a strong multi vitamin and began to feel more alert and with higher energy levels, though I would still fall back into feeling very tired. This provoked me to research online about what was going on. I also had a blood test that revealed I was deficient in folic acid. Strange as I have always eaten a very healthy and balanced diet. …I have a friend who has an allergy to gluten, and she convinced me to cut carbs out of my diet for a couple a weeks. I suddenly felt 100 times better. I assumed that I had a wheat allergy and began to add carbs (non wheat based) back to my diet. I generally felt better but some of my symptoms returned. This is when I began to read about candida…. 18 years ago I had an operation for an infection in my bone. I was a child and was intravenously given twice the adult dosage of antibiotic for a month. I was never given probiotics. Maybe this was the cause?… So, for the last 2 weeks I have been taking probiotics twice a day and am avoiding all carbs. A few days ago I started needing to urinate two or three times a night. Three days ago I felt very tired with slightly achy muscles. The following day, the same but a little better, also little sneezy and bunged up at the same time. Today I feel pretty much fine. I am till going to the bathroom in the night, but less frequently. …My question is, was this part of candida die-off? I feel pretty good today, is it possible that I have completed my treatment and can go back to eating carbs in my diet? Thanks!

I decided as part of a healthy body I’d start eating better (PFC) in hopes of losing an excess 70-80 lbs that I can’t seem to shake. I decided to start taking a probiotic and after taking it for 3 days I believe I’m a herx reaction. About a couple of hours after taking it my stomach starting having wicked ulcer like pain which progressed into a fever, really bad chills and total fatigue. I had no digestive etc problems ever I just wanted to be healthier. So my 2 part question how can I end this herx reaction immediately. And should I even bother taking probiotics?

my brother has an auto-inflammatory disease that presents with joint flare ups and skin eruptions. he currently takes methotrexate and enbral and his diet is horrific. i recommended he drink the multi-green kombucha because of the anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and renewal properties of chlorophyll and the probiotic benefits of kombucha. he bought one, drank it pretty quickly on a not so full stomach and proceeded to vomit it all up an hour or two after finishing it. could such a sudden and intense response have been a die-off reaction or is it more likely to be something else? any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hey there! I’m pretty sure I have some sure of a fungal infection. So a few days ago I started adding Kefir (that’s full of all kinds of antibacterial and antifungal probiotics) to my diet (I’m beginning gradually – with 1 cup daily) and also started taking a few spoons of extra-virgin coconut oil and now what I’m experiencing I guess is really a die-off. Do you think it could be a die-off? After all I’ve added multiple antifungal and antibacterial natural ingredients.

    • Avatar

      Hi Martin,

Thanks for reaching out! It could very well be a die-off reaction or it could simply be a reaction. It’s important when adding in kefir, or any probiotics for that matter, to add them in slowly. Think teaspoon or even smaller amounts. If you continue to react for more than 3-7 days, then consider taking it out and retesting by starting out slower.

I was put on the SCD because of I was diagnosed with dysbiosis in 2004 due to a long-term history of antibiotic use. My primary symptom with that has been anal itch. I’ve been off and on the SCD since then (mostly on). I’ve been very strict on the SCD for 6 weeks now. I’ve been trying to tweak it by going on the intro diet and using your phasing plan. I still had the problem after doing the intro diet for 3 days. I’m only in phase one now and believe I will have to go totally off fruit for a few days to see if that will help. Do you have any suggestions for me that will help me clear up this problem? I haven’t really been able yet to figure out the culprit.

When I started the candida diet I too thought I had die off. Two weeks of hell followed by a total body collapse & five days in hospital with a near fatal asthma attack. I refused to go back to my old ways bread, sugar & junk food. So persisted with trying different diets, I was severely ill for a couple of years and it now appeared that I was allergic to EVERYTHING. After trying the gaps diet I had a particularly BAD reaction. I googled information on the GAPS diet and it dawned on me I could be salicylate intolerant. I also have chronic candida. I cannot have many herbal antifungals as it shuts down my breathing. I am now studying a science and health related course at Uni & recently discovered a scientific paper that suggests candida can also live on phenols as well as sugar and carbs. Salicylates are in the phenol group meaning that the reaction I get to salicylates could be either true salicylate intolerance OR acetaldehyde toxicity OR possibly both. Not sure where to go from here but I am currently experimenting with digestive enzymes. The reaction I get from eating salicylate foods are: hives, brain fog, confusion, migraine, nausea, dizziness, angry. If I ignore the warnings & do not cut out all salicylates completely, it very quickly progresses to hormone imbalance, paranoia, suicidal depression, IBS, tearfulness, chest pain, twitching, asthma symptoms, hives spread from legs to other parts of the body, severe anxiety, insomnia, back pain, joint pain and sometimes hallucinations. Strangely I have found that Hypericum perforatum controls many of the symptoms despite containing salicylates. I also have an extremely bad reaction to perfume.

      Hi Ida,
Your symptoms sound incredibly similar to mine!

I am currently going through Dynamic Neural Retraining System by Annie Hopper.

I must say that it works!! I got off of it for awhile and boom everything returned. It works by calming down an OVERreactive/protective Limbic system. Once the Limbic system is traumatized (by virus, emotional trauma, physical trauma, environmental toxins, etc…) it remembers this. Its duty is to protect us. However, in limbic system trauma, any bit of threat now becomes classified as a life threatening danger. It can result in very REAL physical, emotional and physiological symptoms.

The DNRS works on the concept of neuroplasticity- the brains ability to rewire and change itself. This has been proven by science. One of the biggest breakthroughs in medical science to date, IMHO.

I’ve recently been on a quest to not take any OTC or pharmaceutical meds..I started using essential oils with improvement. I had a reaction to one of the oils. I had eczema when I started them. The eczema is worse and someone said I may have a phenol reaction which then turned into I have systemic candida. I had read on that years ago, and I’ve been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, positive RA factor, I have chronic sinus infections, and IBS. I used to take a lot of antacids and had my gallbladder out last year…so I know my liver is working hard. I’ve always had a high carb, high sugar diet but not over weight but over my required weight for height. I started a no carb/gluten diet two weeks ago. For some reason I thought corn would be ok? For 3 days I’ve done the candida diet that you eat nothing but a piece of chicken and veggies on…my skin is on fire itching!! My eczema seems to be clearing but I aggravate it by scratching like mad!!! I just got over a terrible cold with just oils. I’m taking a probiotic and oregano oil. My body is on fire itchy..is that die off?? And what do I do…& I don’t think I can continue this diet. I’m hungry and itchy and cranky. And itchy!!

I don’t believe that this Healing Crisis and Die-Off stuff is good for you and here is why?

I tried something call Lauricidin (Aka monolaurin) a few years back. No matter how I dosed it I always got tired and sick. Very sick, upper respiratory infections and sinus infections that would require anti-biotics if I did not know how to treat them naturally.

I stopped using it and threw away $200 worth of that garbage. Since then I have been only since for about 24-48 hours never seeing a doctor or on Anti-biotics. If I feels sick I take Soverign Colloidal Silver and I also added Lugol’s Iodine into my diet. I live on super foods. I also take a lot of L-Glutimine.

My rule is if it makes me feel good and gives me energy I eat, if it robs my energy and makes me tired I don’t.

Now I’m having a flu-like reaction to Colostrum same thing that the Lauricidin did to me. I won’t be taking it again. People can spead years trying herx out toxins. And I can see it if you have a lifestyle of Pharma Drug, Rec Drugs, Alchohol, Crap food and are generally not healthy.

But I was in perfect health and had no issues at all until I too the Colostrum. So to me that stuff is poison, not something cleaning me out.

There are other ways to rid your body of toxins that is more gentile. For example the Cold sores/Herpies Virus can be killed with the Silver I mentioned. Coconut oil also is more gentile and kills viruses. Healing should not make you sick.

Wow–that is very odd as people use it to treat sinus infections, like myself. Though I mainly use it to ward off any potential H Pylori (which I have had in the past.).

I’ve been doing SCD for 15 weeks as of today. The first month was fine; the only noticeable difference was when I would accidentally eat something that I wasn’t supposed to, and I would be sick the next day (bloating, loose and very smelly stool, etc.) Second and third months, I had way more energy, a higher sex drive, and less brain fog. Now in my fourth month, I’ve been having problems, and I don’t know why — wondering if anyone can help me out. Seemingly, I don’t think that I’ve done much to change dramatically what’s been happening — no new foods that I can think of or supplements or anything — but I’ve had loose and smelly stools off and on for two weeks now (last week was worse than this week). Last Wednesday, I had to sleep the entire day: I was awake for about 3 hours all day after attempting to wake up at 9am… instead, I slept until 7pm, and then I lasted until about 11pm, and then went back to sleep again. Now it’s 8 days later, Thursday, and I’ve got the same issue; slept all day long. On top of this, I’ve had chronic eczema for the last three weeks or so. It almost goes away and then it flairs up again. (This cold just be the unusually cold and dry winter we’re having, but I haven’t had eczema in about 8 years.)

Do you have any thoughts on what might be going on?

Die off is a a complicated subject and it can be hard sometimes to identify. You say that unless you have taken an antimicrobial supplement any reaction is unlikely to be die off. The trouble with that statement is that the assumption behind it seems to be that only very particular supplements are antimicrobial or anti parasitic and that just isn’t true. Many if not most minerals, vitamins and herbs have some or a lot of antimicrobial or antiparasitic effects. If you start taking them suddenly at high enough dosage they can provoke enough change in microbes and immune function to cause symptoms. Vitamins a, c, d, e, k2 can all do this as well as magnesium, zinc, iodine, boron, etc. Even culinary herbs are powerful antimicrobial/anti parasite herbs such as thyme, rosemary, mints, sage. Enough of them and you could very well feel the effects. I have studied herbalism from professional herbalists and these herbs are very potent.
So while I agree that you need to consider all the possibilities as to why you may have started feeling unwell, particularly the 4 horsemen, I think it is possible and even likely to have die off from a broad range of supplements and even foods.

Found your site in January and immediately started following. Please consider sharing the calming reminder again. I so wish you guys were taking new clients. Glad to have found this site though. Hello Steve,
Thank you for your article, it was very informative. I am starting an antiparasitic course in a few days so I’m trying to prep for a die-off reaction (I’ve never had one before.) Any suggestions for dealing with it? I’m planning to take a few days off from work and drink a ginger tea concoction recommended by my doctor. It looks like nightly baths might help. Any additional thoughts?
    Thank you,

1 month ago, I eliminated gluten and dairy from my daughter’s diet. She is 2 years old. She had been constipated for 4 months and has eczema and wakes frequently (sometimes every 20 or 30 mins) in the night. She also has purple under her eyes and often goes very pale, almost grey. About 2 weeks ago I introduced a probiotic. Now for the past week she has been pooping 4-5 times each day and it is very loose. Her eczema has gotten much worse, but subsequently much better (but I did start using a new cream). THe purple under her eyes seems better and her complexion looks more rosey. Is she reacting to gluten free foods (I try not to give her much but she does get some of the pasta and a bit of the bread some days) or is this die off?

  60. Avatar

So is it good to get die off? Or should I back off so I don’t feel so crummy? I have candida and I’ve started to get blisters inbetween my fingers. I’m taking garlic, oregano, apple cider vinegar, threelac, not eating any sugar or carbohydrates… And the other day I thought I had the flu but now I see it might be this. Should I hold off on some of this stuff or keep going?
    Thanks for ghetto insight!

This is very helpful. I’ve been on SCD for about a month now and haven’t been cheating, nor do I intend to. It’s been somewhat frustrating, though, to eat the way I’m supposed to and have a 5 on the “poop scale” and then have poop that’s a sand-like texture shortly thereafter and not understand why. I’m trying to be patient! Thanks for all the great help.

Hi there I need some serious help. I’ve been very very sick for six months now. What started off with nausea and gas for two months led to ibs. Then I started having allergic ige reactions to so many foods. I got down to eating three things. I went to a new dr and they diagnosed me with leaky gut and said I had heavy metals. They then began a detox and my whole bdy went crazy. I had terrible brain fog, panic attacks and couldn’t move my body. I went to another dr who told me to stop all supple, nets and just start eating slowly. My chiropractor and acupuncturist say my liver is stopped up and not filtering out the toxins and my lymphatic system is also stopped up. I then got more tests done and was diagnosed with Lyme disease and am in my first week of antibiotic treatment. I’m so sick evey day I can’t take care of myself. I get brain fig everything I eat or I get emotional and can’t move, I get chills, I’ve lost 35 lbs etc etc. I tried keeling a food journal but it seems there is no consistency. Literally everything I Putin my mouth I have terrible reactions and sometimes they last all day. My quality if life is terrible and I’m very depressed. My infectious disease dr says my body is very inflamed which shows its fighting something. Can anyone help me?? Everything revolves around my gut. I need help so bad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

But my weight never drops. I heard that buffer ph could help this problem.
Is it true? Thank you for your help.

It did seem a little strange that everyone was throwing “die-off” around so much… I currently feel really bad flu-like symptoms and I don’t know if it’s because I just started on itraconazole (Sporanox) + anti-fungal cream, or that I’ve been trying to eat almost no sugars/carb rich food and my body is freaking out: “NEED.SUGAR.NOW.”

Either way, it’s really unpleasant, especially because acetometophen decreases the effect of itraconazole so I’m stuck with my headache and nausea. And although I’m not 100% sure if it’s die-off, the idea that it could be keeps me positive. If my flu symtoms get worse though, I’m going to the Dr.

Milk thistle plus licorice (capsules), psyllium, plenty of water, concentrated lemon juice plus finely sliced fresh garlic, “Detox Tea” (dandelion, etc.), and anything else that helps the liver may improve die-off symptoms. The largest die-off symptoms I’ve ever gotten were from monolaurin which did a fantastic job of killing bad flora, including the Epstein-Barr virus which I would suspect many people have and don’t know it. It causes unbearable fatigue, brain fog, muscle weakness/pain, joint pain, depression, flu-like symptoms, etc. (like having mono all the time). I’ve apparently had it for more than a year, and probably most of my life on and off. Also, alkalizing my diet and taking VAXA Buffer pH works for me. You need to test your urine during this. Before starting this regime, my urine pH was lower than the pH paper measured (5.5). It should be between 6.5 and 7.5. Probiotics help. I also poured a probiotic capsule on my tongue before going to bed one night, and my sinuses cleared up and my saliva improved.

    Hi there,

Thanks for this informative post. I have a question that I was hoping you could explain to me. and let me apologize for my long post in advance, but I thought in order for you to be able to answer you might need to know a bit about my background! so here we go:

For the past 2,1/2 years I’ve been suffering from a lot of health problem which no GP or specialist could figure out what the source was! It started with lots of tremors and extreme weakness after a round of antibiotics I have for what was thought to be a sinus infection! after that my health just spiralled down with my symptoms changing frequently! to cut it short I’ve been suffering from lots of GI problems including huge amount gas, intense abdominal pains, nausea, extreme acid reflux, as well as fainting and light-headedness, brain fog, etc!

After doing a lot of tests with no answer I started seeing a naturopath and after trying a lot of different herbal formulas and supplements (some of which helped my constant nausea and some other symptoms to some extent), I finally did a comprehensive stool test and the results came back that I have a lot of “Blastocystis hominis” as well as potential Pathogenic “Klebsiella pneumoniae” . So, my naturopath got me started on a anti-parasitic, anti-microbial tincture (including black walnut, barberry, etc), as well as garlic pills and oil of oregano. A week after I started this medication I had a day that I had very intense body pain, headache and sore throat and then I felt unbelievably weak to the point that I had to be carried to my bed and couldn’t walk or talk any more! then I slept for 13 hrs straight (not waking up even once which never happens to me!) and when I woke up I had to go to bathroom 6-7 times and felt weak for the rest of the day. When I woke up the day after all the pain and weakness was gone and for about 16 days after I felt much better than I’ve felt in more than two years!! my abdominal pain was almost gone, I have no more bloating and I could eat without pain in a long time! … But then again last Friday (ie. 17 days after that first episode of what we thought was a severe die-off), I got so dizzy and almost fainted in the subway coming back home! then I started to sweat all over and I was again extremely weak with and intense headache for the rest of afternoon! I was feeling better for two days after that, and then again I started feeling very weak and light-headed starting on the third day (Monday). I’ve been feeling once again extremely weak and faint (specially before my bowel movements which are very loose by the way!) to the point that I had to skip work for a day and leave early the other days! it’s now Friday and I feel a bit stronger today but still have abdominal pain and a bit light-headed! so my question is based on your experience do you think I was (or am still) going through a 2nd die-off phase? or do you think this is caused by something else?! I would really appreciate your thought on this.

I see that your post has not been answered yet, and I don’t presume to know as much as The Guys, but it sounds like it may be time to back off the killing regime and bolster the “good gut flora” for a while. Such as: stop taking the tincture at least for a while (which sounded like it worked great! but it can be harsh on the body) and start taking a high end probiotic, garlic + lemon juice shots, dandelion tea, Ojibwa tea, milk thistle, lots of water and lots of rest. I often get similar symptoms to what you described when I over-do it (mentally or physically).

To me, this is a marathon, not a sprint, and you want to be good to yourself with a restful and healing lifestyle. You need to be in healing mode for a while, maybe for a long while. I stay away from raw foods and eat/drink a lot of veg broths including squash and carrot — the premade boxed ones seem good to me, and I have no energy to cook when I’m very sick. I think juicing might be too hard on my body yet, but I do drink pre-made fresh carrot juice and V-8 with sea salt. I get (and have always had) salt cravings, so the VAXA Buffer pH helps with that as well as sea vegetables (also have iodine). Table salt is acidic. You could also try warm baths with 1/2 cup each Epsom salt, baking soda and sea salt which has a soothing detox effect.

Again, I think that alkalizing the diet will help greatly. You could try dilute baking soda water before bed for a while, not long-term.

I have just come across your site while looking up die-off. I have started taking coconut oil and I am experiencing die-off, I am starting my second week of really bad flu/cold symptoms. I emailed Br. Bruce Fife who recommends and is pushing coconut oil, he said it could last weeks (at worst). As you think 7 days max for die-off maybe people are experiencing it for longer periods.

I just want to start off by saying thank you for everything that you do for us in the SCD Lifestyle community.

I am currently undergoing a research study for fecal transplant for UC. I had my first fecal transplant today, but within about an hour and a half I started getting chills, and I feel the way I do when I have a cold with a headache.

    Could that be die off?

Moodswing, is that a die off symptom? I took bentonite and fiber for the first time and an hour later I was having mood swings. Two hours later, moods swings still persistnat, I took an additional dose of elimination herbs: blacknut hull, cloves, irish mosh, milk thistle, pau d’arco, woodwoorm herb. Obviously I started feeling worse. I took an epsom salt bath to try and rid some this feeling. I did feel a bit more relaxed. Today I’m feeling just as moody.

I can only eat GROUND TURKEY, BLACK BEANS and ROMAINE LETTUCE (that is it). I have been on this diet for over 3 years and it is killing me. I eat over 4000 calories a day and I can barely maintain my body weight at 180 lbs, I am 6′ 5″ and very thin. I dropped from 200 lbs. I would estimate my body fat easily under 6%. I use to be very muscular before this illness. I cannot change anything in my diet without a severe reaction of almost instant ance, bloating, headache, anger or mood changes, fatigue you name it. I have been to Stanford University, Mayo-clinic etc and no help. A doctor in L.A. found the unknown parasite and yeast fungi problem and tried to treat me for it, no change. I’ve read other places by other experts, that die off with people who have been chronically ill, can last MUCH longer than a week. When your detoxing or changing things in a toxic body, the side effects can continue for awhile. I think, it’s misleading to say 5 days, that may be for some people who just have acute or milder problems.

        • Avatar

Hi Judi – thank you so much for reaching out and brining this up.

There really is no way to know how long “die-off” itself lasts. You can have a reaction to a supplement or protocol (a gut reaction, an immune system reaction, a detoxification system reaction) that lasts longer than 5 days.

5 days is just a basic guideline for how long typical Herxheimer-reaction symptoms can last. Anything much longer than that may be a different kind of reaction.

You know your body best and can be the judge of if the symptoms you’re expeiencing are a normal type reaction to a new supplement/protocol or something you should seek medical counsel for.

          I hope this helps!

      Hi Chris,
Your story sounds incredibly disheartening and I really hope my suggestions steer you in the right path. Have you ever had a heavy metals test done? The reason you may not be getting better is because of heavy metals in your tissues which is severely preventing your body from healing. Metal toxicity allows parasites and fungi to thrive in the body and severely weakening the immune system. Have you had metal fillings placed in your teeth or any root canals performed? Metal amalgams are notorious for causing mercury poisoning and root canals create a perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria to thrive thus eventually leading to systemic disease.

Please see an integrative doctor or naturopath who can do the proper testing and hopefully allow you to live more fulfilling, prosperous life. I wish you all the best in the quest for health and longevity.

Your story sounds very similar to my own. I have only recently found the possible link between hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism and leaky gut. Working now with a couple months worth of education, vs the garbage that is marketed to the public IE name brands for IBS, indegestion, gas, ect… most are garbage and the truth is if you just ate the right herbs and founds you would get the best of those items leaving the negatives behind. I hate public common knowledge at this point, truely a melting pot our humanity which I think is part the problem, we have forgotten our animal instincts.
What i have to say is this, I too have lossed weight. At one point worked out several times each week at which time I was using protein supplements “whey” mostly, as well as other supplements like creatine, L-Glutamine, and an array of others. I have heard that huge intake of protein can alter how your body interprets it and cause some sort of allergic reactions. I used roughly 1gram per pound of body weight for training, have heard this is far too much. I have had indigestion since age 12 waking up at night with heartburn, in my early 20’s I started on weights and supplements, not long after mid 20’s my symptoms of indigestion maintained by calcium carbonate at the time began to include gas and bloating, and sweating made its way in too, not sure if it has to do with nervousness from bloating and gas or other. Around that time I switched from tums taking too many times a day to proton pump inhibitor OTC as it was the new thing “big mistake” I think now that I find the need for acid in the gut and the issue that follow PPI’s, I now prefer an acid reducer in a crunch like Rantidine “Zantac” if I have uncontrollable break down and cry reflux which works intimidate unlike PPI which need to build up toxicity levels in your body first. It was around this time I ended up in the hospital for a thyroid issue “infection” I don’t recall the viral infection name but anitbiotics cleared it out after 10day trial. Symtoms since mid 20’s to now currently 32 have worsened “specially bloating, cramps and gas” indigestion I have learned to control by the wrong methods. Suddenly within the last year, I have worked toward educating myself to the natural way of things something should have done first off. What I do now is drink Kefir a fermented milk or sugar juice solution that is cultured with Kefir grain a bacteria that has many dozen probiotics that naturally occur in a healthy gut. This stuff is amazing! Try it if you have not. Like turkey it has Tryptophan in it which might work for you. Look into it and 5-htp amino acid. Try valerian root maybe. What I found interesting was that all the years I had gas bloating symptoms, even indigestion, and sweating; on the days I was sick with cold or flu for the most part my gut symptoms were gone. Weird! Being sick sometimes felt better that normal everyday life. I write this up to a bacterial imbalance within my body.

TRY KEFIR! Very digestible protein source, high in calcium and B vitamins. God send if you believe in a god otherwise it is just plain wonderful. I make my own at home 🙂

Other interesting thing, when drinking alcohol gas and bloating seem to be alleviated, is this yeast, protein to sugar transition, or state of mind not sure why, but tends to work temporarily while drunk, though the next day I pay for it. Recently I am looking at the possibility of hyperthyroidism and possibility of candida so I am using the Kefir for the gut with herbs like ginger, cannabis, licorice, ect.. and going to try milk thistle to clear my waste/detox for a period of time each month, while using marshmallow root to help my thyroid gland get under control. After i eat “usually lunch” also other meals but lunch at work is the big one, an hour to 4 after eating while digesting i get very bloated and gassy, anxiety and brain fog, and headache.

Over this whole experience I have found one thing is clear to me. Society has forgotten mother nature, and thinks they can create something better than what has nurtured us for our entire existence. Its no wonder things like cannabis are illegal, a different conversation all together. Look up endocannabinoid system or how the us government has put patents on THC and CBD in the mid 90’s. Why if they say has not medical use and should be illegal do they patent? Because they want your money, better stated they want to hold power over you. Don’t be fooled, the power is mother nature.

The “right” god is truly great!

After years of begging, my autistic daughters dr. FINALLY agreed to perform a stool test. We had to collect it ourselves. Turns out, she had a blastocystis infection for who knows how long, and shows all the signs. The poo test came up negative for yeast, thankfully. She’s on a powerful antibiotic called bactrim, and her mood has improved dramatically. We’re also hoping she’ll start talking now and begin to act normal. My question is two fold: She started the antibiotic four days ago, and acted sick and sleepy up until today. Is that die off, or side effects. She literally slept all day and all night after her second dose. Also, now that her system is stripped clean of both bad and good bugs, what is the best probiotic for her to take before the bad bugs have a chance to fall back and regroup? Also, do you know how to get a test that will test well water for these bugs. A few yrs ago, she also tested positive for the crp protein released when infected with h. Pylori.

I once put my dog on a raw foods diet for 6 mos. The main ingredient was ground turkey. I thought he was slowly dying. All he did was lie around. Then I stopped and within A few days to a week he was his old self. Turns out the tryptophan in the turkey was exhausting him.

Chris, I know you posted this comment almost 4 yrs ago, but after reading it I wanted to add my agreement with Pauline, who responded to your post. Specifically this part of her comment: “Metal amalgams are notorious for causing mercury poisoning and root canals create a perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria to thrive thus eventually leading to systemic disease.”
If you have not taken her advice and consulted with an integrative doctor or naturopath, I highly recommend that you go see a holistic dentist if you have ANY mercury amalgams and/or root canals. YOU NEED TO HAVE THESE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY!!!! They can lead to many of the chronic symptoms you described, as well as other just as serious health issues. As I was misdiagnosed with a lot of the same things you were I would definitely look into getting a very good food allergist and checking on corn as the culprit many other things that you’re going through the people on the corn allergy and intolerance group on Facebook it’s all the same types of things going on with their bodies. Just a thought

I have been on SCD since the beginning of August. I had minor die-off just after the intro diet, and since then I’ve been steadily feeling better and better until I was better than I’ve ever been before. About two weeks ago, I started feeling something like an infection coming on – swollen glands, very sore teeth, bleeding gums, sore ears and joints, and all over exhaustion. I haven’t introduced anything new, but I have been drinking stinging nettle tea and melissa tea, drinking swedish bitters every day, and been using a special detox cream on my skin. Could any/all of these things have triggered a die-off reaction? And should I be concerned that after nearly two weeks I feel terrible and I’m not sure what to do. Is it time for the doctor, or should I just tough it out.

How do you know if its die off or if its just the symptoms of candida (systemic) and sibo spreading? I am so confused because I battle constant gas, fatigue, weight loss, brain fog, exhaustion after doing so many things daily.

Hi Cait, die off only lasts about 3-5 days, anything beyond that is a sign you need to keep tweaking. It could be on the four horsemen that you’re eating, or it could be an adrenal issue you need to get tested, etc.

It’s a sign that you need to keep testing… hang in there, I believe in you.

    Hi Dave,
I wondered for a long time about the die-off not die off situation. One thing I know for sure and that is that my body is nearly breaking down suffering from either. I started with the SCD and wonder if there is a way to chelate the toxins released by the bacteria? Do you know if ” Molybdenum Amino Acid Chelate” will help? If so is it allowed on the SCD? Do you know any other way to chelate? I never suffered psychologically but started to get panic attacks and anxieties when food is activating the immune system or if die-off is hitting me. I really need a stabiliser and havent found anything yet.

    thank you very much

I think any discussion of SIBO die-off has to include a discussion of leaky gut. If your gut is leaky and you eat something that leaks, you can feel pretty bad in various ways, like you’re being poisoned by IV. That’s not die-off. That’s your immune system revving up and fighting the too-large chemicals that got through your leaky gut. The poisoning can feel a little different with each kind of food, and you can taste the food chemicals from the serum going into your saliva.

The above statements are guesses from experience and from gleaning. Am I right?

I love the Blood Type theory. An apple may be good for one bloodtype but poisonous to another. The antigen response is powerful. Great theory for sure. Good response…leaky gut issues can be source. In edition to “die off” i hear Detox alot too. Same difference I guess?
