Why More Protein Isn’t the Whole Story

Protein has become one of the biggest nutrition conversations for women in midlife — and understandably so.

Unfortunately, there is no symptom checklist that can absolutely diagnose low stomach acid with certainty.

But your symptoms are still really useful pieces of information!

Bloating can have many causes. Reflux can have many causes. Feeling overly full after meals can have many causes.

Pay attention to patterns, particularly around protein-rich meals.

For example:

  • Does steak seem to sit heavily in your stomach?

  • Do you feel uncomfortably full long after a meal?

  • Do you regularly burp after eating?

  • Does increasing your protein make you feel worse instead of better?

  • Do you feel bloated shortly after eating?

  • Does it feel like digestion is simply slow?

They are reasons to stop thinking exclusively about what you're eating and start thinking about how you're digesting it.

That distinction can be incredibly useful.

What About Heartburn? Doesn't That Mean I Have Too Much Acid?

Maybe — and this is where the internet often gets itself into trouble.

Heartburn tells you that stomach contents are reaching or irritating the esophagus.
